Breaker shook his head, a smile slowly forming that didn’t reach his eyes. “Nothin’ a simple DNA test couldn’t prove. I got all the time in the world to wait for the result.”

Flinching before I could stop myself, I knew he called my bluff. “You’ll never get anywhere near her,” I promised. “She’smylittle girl. I raised her. I’m her mother.” Tears of anger rushed to the surface of my eyes, threatening to fall. “No court would ever give you parental rights.”

“You sure about that?” He tilted his head to the side.

“A convicted felon? Never.”

“Interesting how you’ve never been hurt or bothered in that little apartment you live in, huh? Not a great part of town to raise a child.”

I could feel the blood drain from my face.

“What’s that supposed to mean?” Cara asked, nearly shrieking the words.

“You’ve never been alone, Charlotte. Like I said, you’remine.”

My entire body began to tremble, and I backed away, shaking my head as the tears I’d held back slipped down my cheeks. “No.”

How was this possible? How did he know about Sophie and never try to see her?

Oh, God. What if he did and I never knew? Would she have told me?

“I’m gonna get out of here, baby. Trust me on that. And then I’m comin’ for you.”

Mack stood in front of me, his voice so deadly calm that goosebumps appeared on the skin on my arms as he spoke. “You’ll have to get through me first.”

Breaker ticked his chin at Mack. “Challenge accepted.”

I had to get out of here. My chest felt so tight I thought my lungs would burst and the bones would crack. I didn’t bother brushing away the tears as I ran from the jail, not stopping until I burst outside into the sunshine, chest heaving as I sucked in numerous breaths. Nothing helped.

Panic surged as I realized that Breaker would come for Sophie.

He couldn’t have her. I wouldn’t let him. No way!

“Charlotte!” My sister’s worried cry brought me back into reality, blinking as she pulled me into a hug. “It’s okay. We’re not gonna let him take Sophie. I swear it!”

Mack moved closer as Cara backed up, catching the determined expression on his face. “He’s not getting out of that jail, Charlotte. I’ll have Sydney think of something. Make shit up if we have to. I don’t care as long as he can’t get to you.”

“Or my daughter,” I added firmly.

“Yeah. That’s what I meant. Both of you are under the protection of the Riders now. Have been since the moment R.J. claimed your sister.”

Angrily, I swiped the tears off my cheeks. “He’s part of an MC like you,” I pointed out. “If you protect your own this fiercely, then don’t you think Satan’s Outlaws are gonna do the same? They’ll find me and Sophie. They’ll take us. He’s been watching me since the night we met.”

Mack’s hands curled into fists as he shook his head. “No. He thinks he’s got that kind of support, but he doesn’t. Those Outlaws aren’t loyal to one another. They turn on a fucking dime. This club,” he paused, pointing at his leather vest, “We’re family. There’s a difference.”

“Damn fucking straight,” R.J. agreed.

Scoffing, I wasn’t sure what to believe. I didn’t know anything about motorcycle clubs or the brotherhood they constantly referred to, swearing loyalty and blood to one another. For all I knew, that was common for any mc. Didn’t mean the Riders were any closer or more likely to defend one another than the Outlaws.

“It doesn’t matter. What matters is keeping my daughter safe and I’ll do that however I need to, no matter how vicious or violent I need to become to do it.”

Mack blinked, staring like he was seeing me for the first time. Admiration and respect lingered in his gaze, just shy of the anger I could see burning in his dark blue eyes.

The determined lock of his jaw seemed a warning this conversation wasn’t over yet. I didn’t have the space in my head to worry about it. Stomping to his bike, I placed the helmet over my head, lowering my ass onto the seat.

“I need to get home to Sophie,” I announced, cutting off any further delay.

Mack took his place in front of me, firing up his ride as the Harley rumbled to life beneath us. I slipped my arms around him, soaking some of his strength into my body. No one had to tell me that meeting Breaker today meant trouble was headed my way.
