CARMELA

“Just tell us what you need from us," I told Cyburn. "We will follow your lead."

Cyburn seemed pleased to hear me say that, because he gave me a huge smile and a look of relief washed over his face.

However, he also seemed a little stressed, so I wanted to do anything I could to help him out and relieve some of that angst. It was impossiblenotto feel the tension, especially when there were killer robots on the loose while we attempted to take control over their ship.

"Thank you," he said and then wrapped his arm around me. "Every little bit helps."

Cyburn was massive, but I fit perfectly into the nook of his burly, muscular, leaf-green arms. It was a wholesome moment intertwined into the disorder going on all around us.

"I'm going to call in to Silver on the communicator," Cyburn mentioned, looking at Nix. "Maybe she can provide us with a ship schematic to help us navigate on our tablets a little better."

"Sounds like a good place to start," Nix agreed with a nod.

"Who is Silver?" I asked.

"She is our A.I.," Cyburn said. Give her a little background on Silver. "Ourself-awareA.I., I should mention."

"Oh, that's pretty cool," I said, wishing I could say that I'd built a self-aware robot before. Maybe one day. If I ever got off this cyborg ship alive.

"She works on TheBladefor us," Cyburn said. "I can't remember if I told you or not, but theBladeis the main ship where we are living right now."

"It's good that you have the help you need," I said.

"Yes," Cyburn agreed, smiling at me again. Then he laughed. "Except she can be a little stubborn and snarky when she wants to be."

"Just never tellherthat," Nix added, and then they both laughed.

"Trust me, your secret is safe with me," I said with an endearing smile to both of them.

"She's very loyal and protective of the crew," Cyburn said and looked over at me. "I think the two of you would get along."

"She sounds interesting," I said. I wanted to know more about her, but Cyburn was already calling in on his device to her.

She picked up a few seconds later. Her voice was crackly at first, and then it came in clearer. It was smooth, robotic, and very feminine.

"Silver? It's Cyburn. We need your help, and we need it fast." He spoke quickly and urgently.

"Sure, boss," Silver answered in a breezy tone that eased my mind just a bit.

If she was in their mothership that was followingthisone andshedidn't sound immediately worried, then why should I? My mind was all over the place. I didn't know what to do, or what to think. I was still trying to process all this craziness that was happening to me.

"Do you think you can download a ship schematic into our tablets?" Cyburn asked Silver. "Mine and Nix's?"

"Sure thing," Silver chimed cheerily. "I'm happy to help. How are things going there on the Belic slave ship?"

"They could be better," Cyburn admitted grimly, and then my stomach plunged again. He let out a long, heavy sigh. "But we're managing. We're hiding out right now after we got into a fight with some of the Belic patrol on board doing their rounds. We're separated from the rest of the crew. They know we're here, and they probably know what we're trying to do, too."

"Have you been able to rescue any humans?" Silver asked.

Cyburn tossed an apprehensive glance at me that took me off guard. There was something cautious in his black eyes that threw me off for a second.

"Yes, one… a woman. Her name is Carmela," he told his A.I.

"Oh, well that is wonderful," Silver said, sounding genuinely delighted to hear the news, which helped ease my mind again.
