I glanced in front of me to make sure Nix was successfully reining Carmela back in to us. Only, it was worse than I realized.

She was practically swallowed into a sea of ravaging robots. Her petite body fell to the ground. Nix was there with her. I could still see him, and he was still standing upright as he attacked them so he could get to Carmela.

However, I was still afraid he wouldn't be able to lift her back up before the aggressive robots battered her to the brink of death.

My stomach twisted into anxious knots. My pulse drummed violently through my ears and temples. Another clammy, nervous sweat broke out on my skin.

With a roar of tenacity, I quickly ducked behind another one of the spiked robot's violent jabs. I cut around him before he knew what was coming and ripped his control panel open.

The robot's body went limp, and it collapsed to its knees. Its yellow eyes went instantly black, fizzling out. It released an android-like, metallic whining sound. Its breath was no more. Its life support had been claimed.

It was over, but there were more.

The rest of its body fell fast, face first on the ground, with a loud, smacking sound. Unfortunately, it wasn't the end. We weren't at the finish line yet.

There were dozens of these frisky little robot guards still left to defeat. I was already feeling fatigued and a little battered, but I couldn't give up. I was so close to winning this part of the battle that I could taste it.

It wasn't just Carmela who needed me. It was my entire planet. The livelihood of others depended on my success at being able to sabotage these ships and take control over not only the ships themselves— but over the resources and supplies on board as well.

It dawned on me suddenly— that I was still on the communicator with Silver.

"Silver, are you there?" I asked into my headpiece. In all the tussle and chaos, I'd lost track of her.

I couldn't hear anything but a bunch of crinkly static on the other side. I adjusted the monitor and tried to adapt the frequency of the connection before I tried reaching out to Silver again.

"Silver? It's Cyburn. Can you hear me?"

"I can hear you loud and clear, boss," Silver confirmed.

"We are still being terrorized by the guards by the mainframe," I explained. "It is taking longer than expected."

"Where are the rest of your crew mates?" she asked. "Do you have any back up yet?"

"They haven't shown up here yet," I said. "I'm still confident they are diligently wiping out as many robots as they can around the ship."

"Maybe they will show up right when you need them the most," Silver advised. "Don't give up."

All the snarky, sarcastic tendencies and innuendos that Silver displayed sometimes had all but disappeared, and there was authentic concern laced in her smooth, robotic voice.

"We aren't going to give up," I promised. "Don't worry about us."

"You know I have to worry anyway," Silver said. "It's what I'm trained to do."

I smiled. She was back to being her usual, feisty self. "Yes, I know."

All kidding aside, I had a lot riding on this mission. there were too many souls counting on me to persevere for them. It was a huge amount of pressure, but the burden gave me even more drive to charge through, full steam ahead.

I pushed my way to the center of the battle where Carmela and Nix were still attempting to fight off a cluster of guards.

Carmela was off the ground at least and standing upright. She was disabling robots left and right. I had to admit, I was pretty impressed with her skill. It eluded me— the mystery of where this skill came from.

Sure, she had said she worked with robots, programming them, and constructing them back in her Earth city— but where the hell did this talent forcombatcome from? She hadn't mentioned having to deal with much of that, if any at all, back home on Earth— but either way —it made me exponentiallymoreattracted to her.

She could hold her own. I wasn't sure if she was trying to prove herself as worthy for our force, but she was more than worthy in my book— and she had a sexy body to boot.

Case in point— a few seconds later, a brawny robot came up from my right side. Carmela was there in a split second to try and protect me.

Her eyes were fierce as she battled the ferocious, sturdy metal robot. She finally reached its control panel and disabled it with a grunt while gritting her teeth. It was an intense moment when we locked eyes a few seconds later.
