Nix paused as more clapping commenced, from myself included. I couldn’t wait to see if this plan would be successful.

“We are working around the clock to make it functional,” Nix explained.

“Carmela, please come over here,” I said and beckoned her with a wave.

Carmela diplomatically stepped in my direction and stood beside me. I placed my hand on her back and stroked it.

“We have enlisted Carmela here to help us with the robotics aspects,” I mentioned. “She will be involved in piecing together these important steps and equipment to get everything managed well and under control.”

Everyone nodded their agreement. Not a single soul offered any conflictions.

“From there, our plan is to infiltrate the old Capitol, travel to the mainframe, kill the Operator and take over the planet’s army and fleet crews. It’s an ambitious tactic, but I’m confident that we can not only make the journey, but successfully conquer our enemies and take our home world back.”

More wallops came from the crowd as the cheers of praise and gratitude rose around us.

I wrapped my arm around Carmela’s delicate and slender waist. She lifted her chin and gazed up at me with such affection and adoration that it made me dizzy even though I was standing in place.

I gave her rear end a light, and subtle squeeze. It was a private gesture to let her know that I still loved her, wanted her with every fiber of my being, and couldn’t wait to start the next chapter of our lives together.

“As a unit, we will rise. We will be strong. We will overcome all our obstacles. Nothing can stop us if we stick together and work hard. The biggest concern will be to make sure this experimental equipment goes off without a hitch. We need to be invisible in order to infiltrate. If we can turn these goals into reality, then we have a real, decent shot at taking our planet back. It’s time for the sneak attack approach. Once we are on a roll, they won’t even know what hit them. We’ll chew them up and spit them out.”

Another simultaneous eruption of cheers exploded through the area. My crew might be feeding off my optimism, but I fed off their support and endurance just as much. We needed each other, or everything would collapse.

The time to fight was now. There was no room for fear or hesitation in our unit, any longer.

CARMELA

“You’re going to die, human bitch.” Amada’s lips curled and angry spittle flew from her lips as she snarled at me and glared in my direction.

“Amada… wait. Stop.” I held my hands up by my sides, showing surrender. “We can fix this.”

I was doubtful that I would be able to reason with her, but I needed to bide my time before the disturbed woman did something evenmoreimpossibly erratic.

“Break up with Cyburn.” Amada’s black, almond eyes seared through me.

“He loves me,” I protested.

“If he loves you so much, he will leave you in order to save you.” Amada gestured around the ship’s corridor. “Look around you.” Her smile mocked me. “Do you see him anywhere around you? Where is your ‘knight and shining armor’ to save you now?” Amada slapped her knee with amusement and cackled.

Amada stood about six feet apart from me in the corridor ofThe Blade. White lights from the bulbs overhead flashed around us.

Steam billowed up from the grates in the floor. The moisture was scolding hot, burning my skin as it coiled around my exposed ankles and calves.

“You can’t do this.” Hot tears stung in my eyes. I shook my head, but the movement felt like it was happening in slow motion.

Amada’s eyes flickered with hatred. Her lips curved downward into a daring sneer.

“Watch me,” she hissed.

Amada lifted a grenade from behind her back. It was brown, shaped like an oval, oversized egg. I braced myself for the impending explosion as Amada pulled out the grenade’s pin with her fingers. Her smile widened and her eyes gleamed with excitement.

“I told you to stay away from him,” she said. “You were just toostupidto listen. That’s what you humans are.Stupid.Now, you will pay for your stupidity with your life.”

The Bladesuddenly began to spin with such rapid intensity that I was blinded by an onset of dizziness. I reached out, fumbling for grounding. My fingers were finally able to take root on the wall, clutching it with sturdy footing to prevent myself from buckling to the floor.

Amada tossed the grenade underhanded in my direction, as if it were nothing more than a softball and she was the pitcher.
