“So,” I say. “Nicole was pretty amazing at that meeting with Wilder, wasn’t she?” I asked.

“Yeah, she really was,” Cameron says.

“I knew she was good on paper, and I knew she’d be a good lay, but I never knew she was so fucking brilliant,” Chase says.

I pull out a bottle of whiskey that I’ve been saving. We’re sitting in the lounge area of my office. I place three tumblers on the carved oak coffee table.

“It’s time, Chase, for me to pay you back on that expensive scotch,” I say. “I think you’ll find that this Johnny Walker does the trick. It makes your scotch pale in comparison. This, my friends, is a $4000 a bottle.”

I’m bragging, but hey that’s what you can do with friends who have money. We all deserve a break, and that’s exactly what The John Walker is going to do.

“Thanks, man,” Cameron says, taking his glass.

“The thing about Nicole is,” I say, going back on-topic, “I’m not sure if she’s ready for all of this.”

You’d think any girl with three billionaires after her would jump on the opportunity, but Nicole’s not like that. She has integrity, and she’s not a gold digger. I know that, to her, money is less important than her state of happiness.

And so her happiness is all I care about.

“She’s special,” Chase says. “We can’t lose her. No matter what. I know she’s struggling but we just have to help her through this.”

I know that Chase has a vested interest. Nicole is the woman who brought him back to life. If we lost her now, he wouldn’t just be devastated, he’d be jaded forever.

“I guess it’s natural that she would be scared,” Cameron says. “We’re a lot to handle, all of us. But she’s beautiful and she has a brilliant mind. That’s something we just can’t let go of.”

I know Cameron is also taken with her. She appeals to his serious nature. She can hold a conversation about anything. Her knowledge is vast on so many things.

She has class and that’s something that’s hard to find. I know I could put her in a room with even the most prominent of our clients, and that she would shine. And I know Cameron’s attached to the fact that she’s got a lot of layers.

“She’s everything I’ve ever wanted,” I say. “And I can’t even believe I’m admitting that.”

I drink my whiskey and oh, does it go down smooth.

I always thought I was a Playboy and that that was just my nature. I never even pictured settling down with someone. And I’m not saying I’m ready to do that with Nicole, but damn, has she piqued my interest.

I love that she’s easy to have fun with. Whenever I’m with her, life seems a little bit more exciting. That’s exactly what I need in a girl.

“We have to talk about her career,” Cameron says. “I can’t leave her hanging. Even if we lost her, and I’m not saying that we will, but if we did, we have to make sure that her career is secure.”

“Yes,” Chase says. “She will go far no matter what, and I want to be the one who pushes her there.”

“So what do you think her future is here?” Cameron asks. “She’ll advance, but we just have to figure out how.”

I’m happy to say I’ve already taken the lead on that. I’ve been considering Nicole’s career ever since she started with us. I don’t just want her to be our little office pet.

I want her to go out into the political world and to do what she does best.

“Well, you guys,” I say, leaning against the black leather of my new chair. “I’m taking her with me on Monday to meet a potential client. It’ll be good for her and it’ll show me how far she can spread her wings.”

Chase looks up at me, “Do you really think she’s ready for that?”

“Oh, I have no doubt.”

“Well,” Cameron looks relaxed. “Then do it. We’ll see how she does and that’ll give us an idea of where to place her.”

“That’s exactly what I was thinking,” I say.

The point of the meeting will be Nicole’s career, but a part of me can’t help but be eager to have that time with her and to be the one with her when she approaches a big client.

I know she’ll do great. These political people have no idea what they’ll be in for when they deal with her.

We may be sharks in the big ocean of politics, but she’s like a stingray—soft to the touch, but ready to kill.

I’m so optimistic about how my new little protégé will do under our guidance. She could bring this firm up to a new level. Of that I am sure.

Nicole

After work, I decide to walk around the city and to do some shopping. Nothing clears my head like shopping, and that’s certainly what I need right now.
