“Senator Craig didn’t have a leg to stand on,” Adam is saying to the guys.

“Would you like a drink?” Chase asks.

“I’ll have whatever you’re having,” I say.

“All right, dirty martini it is.”

“So, then she says we’re not going to represent you anymore, and then she just turned and left out of his office just like that.”

I love that Adam feels the need to brag about me. I love that I impressed him, and that I’m now impressing the guys with my knowledge of political affairs.

This relationship is not just about sex for me; it’s also professional. My entire professional career depends on how I do here—and I plan on earning my place.

“You’re an eager learner, Nicole,” Chase says as he hands me my martini. “You have a hunger and a drive that sets you apart. Most people from your generation just feel entitled, and we don’t appreciate entitlement around here, do we, guys?”

“Definitely not,” Cameron says, rubbing my neck.

I love the feeling of his hands on my body. Cameron’s so in charge, and that turns me on. I feel so elated to be here in the midst of all my guys.

Only when things are like this does it feel totally right.

“Well,” Chase says. “You definitely have a good eye for candidates. And that impresses us, Nicole.”

Now is my moment. If I don’t ask the question now, I’ll never do it. This is my opening, right when they’re in the midst of praising me.

“So then,” I say nonchalantly, ” what are the chances of my being allowed to run a campaign? You know, like maybe Sebastian King’s?”

They look stunned, like they didn’t expect that coming. But they don’t look doubtful, so that’s a good thing. I need to argue my case.

“I was just thinking,” I say. “I know Sebastian better than any of you guys, because of my relationship with Lily. So I think that qualifies me as having insider information. Which means I should probably be the one to run his campaign.”

I shrug, to make it look like not that big of a deal to me. I use the opportunity to sip my martini, so that I can pause and judge their reactions. They all exchange glances, and I wonder what it means.

“That’s quite a hefty consideration, Nicole. Sebastian’s our biggest political fish. Running his campaign would mean being responsible for millions of dollars worth of funding. Can you really see yourself doing that so quickly?”

I set my martini down, so that I can assure them of my qualifications and of the fact that I would most surely run Sebastian’s ticket under their guidance.

“Well, I know you all will be there to guide me every step of the way. And what better way to see if I can swim than to throw me in the deep end of the ocean with all the sharks?”

“Hmm, she’s got a point,” Adam looks jovial, like he’s enjoying all this.

“Well,” Cameron says. “It’s not out of the question. But we will need time to think about it.”

I’m sure my look of pure happiness is evident to them all. I have no doubt that I can handle a case this big. I just need my chance to prove it and to shine. I thrive under pressure, so I think managing this campaign will be perfect.

If there’s one thing a King campaign will bring, it’s the added pressure of his famous name under the scrutiny of a political campaign. And I know, I just know, that I can do it.

I just need these guys to put their money where their mouth is and trust me with such a big job.

Cameron

I’ve called Adam and Chase into my office. They’re on their way, and I’m sitting here waiting. I’ve thought a lot about Nicole’s suggestion, that she take over Sebastian King’s campaign.

While I don’t think it’s a bad idea, I do think she needs to commit to something, mainly us.

Normally I wouldn’t even think of giving a new hire such a big client. But Nicole’s earned it. Not just in the bedroom, but in the way she works. I’ve never met a college grad with such a keen eye for the way honesty and integrity should affect the political landscape.

I didn’t start this firm to support corruption. And I need people working for me that have a history of dealing with the truth and who are willing to risk everything for it.

The promise of our firm when we first started out, when we sat together at local bars and diners and scratched out our ideas on napkins, was that this firm would have a positive impact on the world. We pride ourselves on representing only the best of the best. We are not swayed by money as much as we are by character.

I think Nicole is not only a good scout for the character we’re looking for, but I think she herself has that.
