“We could be quick.” She laughed, then changed her tone. “I’m joking.”

River knew her well enough to realize she wasn’t joking. She was daring him. He smiled at her. “Or maybe you got strangely attracted to the young, inappropriately flirty me.”

“At least you know that was not appropriate.”

He chuckled, then realized her amulet was gone. He touched her chest “It disappeared?”

She nodded. Now that his hand was here, he didn’t want to move it away. Perhaps they could be inappropriate—and fast—before the dragons noticed anything.

The past had been restored to its right place. As to the future, it lay wide open for them. He trusted it now, and trusted that there was also good at work in the world.
