“Would you forget your people? I mean, your dragons? If you went somewhere in search of help and they asked you to help them, what would you do?”

Siniari paused. “I think… I’d try to help both, but I’d consider which one needed me the most first. I will convince my mother to send a dragon delegation to Aluria, cousin, I already told you that. It’s just… whatever happens, I wish you could consider this your home too.”

“Thank you.” The truth was that his cousin was trying to be nice. “But what about Leah?”

“We’ll get her a room as well. It’s easier in her case.” Siniari chuckled. “She takes less space.”

Yes, unlike Fel, who would spend all his time as a dragon. It was also a reminder that he and Leah couldn’t be together. And then, like Fel, she hadn’t come here to stay and also had a kingdom to protect. The issue would be saying goodbye to the dragons after all the commotion with this iron dragon celebration and all the hope they were placing on Fel. Fel, who knew nothing about dragon magic, who doubted the Boundless would keep wearing metal armor. They couldn’t be that stupid. Or were they? A question crossed his mind.

“Siniari,” Fel said. “If everyone knows about the Iron Dragon, how come they were wearing metal armor? That sounds illogical.”

“It isn’t really, if you think that they also grew up hearing that the iron dragon would be the light in the dark. They think they are the light. More than that, they want to be strong dragons, iron dragons in a way, and that’s what their armors represent. And they wouldn’t have guessed it meant a dragon with metal magic. How could they have predicted it?”

“Well, I’m sure they’ll ditch the metal from now on. You understand what that means for me, right? With iron magic or not, I won’t be able to do much against them.”

Siniari paused and stared at him. “You still have impressive magic. You’ll find other ways to use it.”

“True, but I doubt I’ll be able to defeat a group of enemies on my own again.”

“You never know.”

He followed his cousin to the common area. At least the doors here were large enough for him, not that he felt any less awkward.

Leah and Jacine came out of a room. They were both wearing leather pants and jackets, in the style most dragons liked to wear. Apparently, the clothes for a special celebration were no different. Leah looked beautiful in a dark brown outfit and he wished he could hug her.

“How are you?” he tried to send the thought to Leah only.

Jacine raised her hand. “I can hear you, just so you know. Before you say anything… you know.”

Leah turned to her and narrowed her eyes, but as a joke. “He wasn’t going to say anything inappropriate.”

“Private,” Jacine said. “I was thinking about something private, not inappropriate.”

They left the house, and when they were outside, Siniari turned to Fel. “I’ll fly with you to the ceremonial arena. Jacine can walk with Leah.”

“Walk?” The girl grimaced. “You meanclimba ton of steps.”

“It’s great exercise.”

Jacine smiled. “So is flying.” In a second, she disappeared, replaced by a black dragon, who soared up into the sky, then dove back, and took Leah with her claws. That didn’t look any safer than flying on Fel’s back. At least Leah didn’t look scared, and was laughing instead.

“Are we allowed to do that?” Fel asked his cousin.

“Not really. Humans should climb to the ceremonial arena, but Jacine always likes to push the rules. Let’s go.”

Siniari took his dragon form, his light blue scales reflecting the lanterns illuminating the grounds, and then took flight. Fel moved his wings quickly to catch up with Jacine, wondering how the scale colors worked, since there was so much variety even within the same family. The flight was short, just to a mountain surrounding the valley of the dragon city, where there was a plateau and a large round rock formation, looking indeed like an arena. It had a large circle in the middle, and they landed right on its border, in the lower area. His cousins soon took their human forms.

“Are you all right?” he asked Leah.

“I’m fine.” She walked towards him and placed a hand on one of his wings.

Jacine took her human form and laughed. “Wasn’t it a good idea to get here soon?”

“It was,” Leah said.

Slowly, more and more dragons were coming in, landing in the upper areas around the circle. Most of them swapped to their human forms right after landing, but some of them remained as dragons. Humans were coming as well—walking, not being carried by anyone’s claws. Fel counted some one hundred dragons in total.

“Is this everyone?” he asked his cousins.
