“What?! I had no choice!”

“You always have a choice,” Kirata spat. “You are the goddess of the broken! You deliver vengeance for the living. When will you deliver vengeance for yourself? Are you not one of the living?”

Tempest chose not to answer. She was seething inside. How dare Kirata tell her she was in the wrong for needing to escape? To get away from the abuse she received from those more powerful than her?

Suddenly, she stopped.

Hadn’t she just told Soleil that she wasn’t a weak god? That she should be feared?

“We should keep going. We’re almost there,” Kirata said from the dark as she tugged Tempest’s arm.

Tempest followed. “Where are we going?”

“The exit.”

“If you knew where the exit was, why didn’t you escape yourself?”

“You really think I didn’t try?” Kirata scoffed. “I don’t have the key.”

“What key?”

Kirata stopped, and Tempest ran into her back.

“What do you mean, what key? Did you not bring it with you? Aren’t you here to save me?”

“I was looking for you and planned to save you, but Soleil trapped me in here first.”

Kirata growled. “Fine. Let’s get to the exit, and we’ll figure out what to do there.”

The two continued walking, and soon something appeared, glowing in the distance. As they drew closer, Tempest could make out a wooden jewelry box on a table made of gold.

Kirata led Tempest to it and dropped her hand.

“This is it?” Tempest asked, confused.

“Were you expecting more?”

“Maybe a door or archway... something we could fit within.”

Kirata raised her brow and gave Tempest a look that made her feel as if she was a child. “You’re the one who made this, and you question the decision?”

Tempest blushed and scratched her head. “Good point.”

Upon closer inspection, the box was simple, made of highly polished dark wood and a small golden latch with a lock on it keep it closed.

A sharp sting over her heart made Tempest flinch. She reached up to grab her chest, surprised when something hard hit her fingertips. Tempest reached inside her dress and pulled out the small key Vesper had left her.

She looked from the key to the box on the table and smiled. “Let’s get out of here. I’ve got work to do.”

Kirata laughed. “There’s the goddess of the broken I’ve been waiting for. Let’s do this.”

Chapter 24

Tempestinsertedthekeyinto the lock and turned. There was a click, and the latch sprang open. She lifted the lid of the box, revealing a swirling mass of light inside.

“That’s it?” Kirata asked skeptically.

“You expected something else?” Tempest replied.
