She choked on her sobs. "After this? After treating me this way?"

"Don't give me a reason to be like this, then!" He walked toward her and grabbed her forearms, making her gasp. "I don't wanna be like this! I'm so angry! Why did you go today? Why?"

"We're talking about my father!" she shrieked, trying to free herself, but he didn't let go. "Stop this. You're the one who betrayed me!" She sobbed. "I trusted you. I fought with my father for you. You lied to me. You said you didn't know who killed him, and all this time, it was your gang. Tell me, was it because of us?" Her voice died down to a whisper.

He stared at her with rage in his eyes. His grip tightened, her flesh aching. "All I've ever wanted was to protect you."

"Is that what you're doing right now?" She said, wincing.

He let go of her arms, and she staggered back, her arms numb. She gasped.

He moved toward her again and held her face. "Giselle, I'm sorry."

"Please leave me."

"Not before you forgive me." He grabbed her hair and smashed his lips against hers. She placed her hands on his chest to push him away, one hand still holding the phone, but he was strong. He pulled back, and his eyes filled up with tears. "Why won't you kiss me?"

"You're scaring me! Please leave me."

"I won't ever leave you, my love. I'm sorry. I'm telling you." His grip around her hair tightened, making her head tilt back. He leaned down and kissed her neck. He spoke fast, "I'm sorry for lying that I didn't know that it was my gang, and I'm sorry for hurting you. I just wanna protect you. I don't wanna lose you."

With all her might, she pushed him away.

He stumbled back a few steps, panting. "Giselle?"

She hyperventilated, gasping for air. "Get out!"

"What?" He took a step in her direction.

"No! I need air!"

He held her, this time softly, his tears falling. "I'll be your air. I'm sorry. This will never happen again. I fucked up."

She pushed him again, her vision blurring. "If you don't leave right now, I'm gonna kill myself."

He froze, stood there a moment, and stared at her. "Giselle?"

"I'll call the police!"

"I don't care."

"Then I'll kill myself! Just leave! I need to breathe!"

He gulped. "I'm sorry. I'll see you tomorrow." And he was gone.

She waited a few moments, afraid he might be waiting outside, then ran out of her house bare feet toward Chris's.

Chapter 32

Chris finished taking his shower and stepped out wet-haired in his t-shirt and shorts. He knew he'd have difficulty sleeping tonight, the kiss seared into his brain, so he decided to catch up on work instead. He was about to turn on the laptop to check his emails when he heard a banging on his door.

Wondering who could be at this time, he jogged toward the door and opened it. There was a blur of pink, and then he got hit in the chest by her. He staggered back a step but quickly steadied himself, wrapping her up in his arms.

"Giselle?" he called, panic settling. He pulled her hair back to see her face, but she pushed herself into his chest again. "What's wrong?"

She fisted his shirt in her hands and cried in his arms, her body tense, shuddering with every sob.

He held her to his body, kicking the door shut with his leg. Unbalanced, he tried to adjust her to better hold her, wondering what had gone so wrong. She kept trying to push herself into his embrace as if searching for something, as if trying to hide.
