Xavier's betrayal was highlighted on a white surface. He'd killed her father. Intentionally or not, there was no forgiving that. Chris's betrayal was engulfed in darkness... It was second-hand. She couldn't understand how she was supposed to take it. It didn't matter that he'd kept that information from her. It mattered that he was not what she'd thought of him. The shock was so huge that it was still sinking in, not making any sense.

Someone sat beside her, and she sighed, knowing that it was Chris. He always knew where she was.

"My word revolves around you,"he'd said.

She looked to his left and gasped, scooting away as a reflex. Beside her sat Xavier with a blackened eye, his head bandaged. He stared at her as she looked around for help.

"I'm not gonna hurt you, Giselle." His heavy voice was almost inaudible.

It took a lot of self-restraint to keep herself from flinching. It took all her strength to prevent herself from making him feel like a villain.

"Are you okay?" he asked, his eyes traveling all over her face as if trying to memorize her features.

She gulped, contemplating whether it was wise to indulge in a conversation with a murderer because as much as she hated him for killing her father, he was also someone who'd cared for her and had given up everything to be with her.

She sighed.

"Giselle," he said, pointing toward something behind her back, "your bodyguard is watching me." She looked back to confirm. A tall, muscled, tattooed man stared at them hard. "I'm under surveillance. He's been with me since the hospital, and he's gonna stay with me for Death knows how long. I'm not gonna hurt you."

She looked back at him, her heart aching with his explanations and reassurances. How had life come to this?

"Giselle," he said her name again. A shiver spider-crawled down her spine.

"Why are you here?" she asked.

"I just wanted to see you one last time."

One last time. "How did you know where I was?"

"I went to your home. Your maid informed the bodyguard."

She nodded. "Where are you going?" Her voice and eyes remained low, although she could feel his gaze burning a hole in her.

"I don't know. Maybe Aquaville. Maybe Petrichor."

She looked toward the group of people practicing yoga and licked her lips. "Joining your gang again?"

He sighed. "There's no gang left. Thanks to your lawyer—"

She looked at him, her chest contracting at the sight of him, though she remained expressionless. "What lawyer?"

His brows merged. "Alex?"

"He's a detective."

He raised his brows a bit, the corners of his lips twitching up, sending a jolt of nostalgia through her. "Whatever."

She looked away.

"Alex wiped our gang out," he said. "He had connections in front of which Wrath's connections failed. And I don't really plan on killing again."

She looked at him, nodding. Her jaw clenched as her father's face surfaced in her mind. "About damn time."

He looked down. "I'm sorry."

She inhaled sharply, pushing down the toxic urge to laugh at his face. "What am I supposed to do with that?"

He shook his head. "I'm not asking for forgiveness. I just want you to know that I regret everything."
