They sat on the sofa opposite Alex before she said, "Yeah, why?"

"I'm Alex. Chris might've mentioned that I'd be taking over this case?"

His best friend sighed and turned to him, who'd put an arm behind her on the backrest. "I want this case dropped."

"You don't mean that."

"I do." She shook her head. "I don't want an investigation. I don't want any of that. I just wanna live a normal life—as normal as I can. I don't need these meetings, these investigations. I..."

"Don't you wanna find who was behind all of this?" Chris could feel his anger bubbling up. Her refusal felt like a betrayal.

"No. It doesn't matter!"

"How?"

"It's not gonna bring daddy back!"

Chris gulped, waited a moment, then said in a calmer voice, "What if you're in danger?"

"I have you."

His heart warmed, but he couldn't give up. "What ifI'min danger?"

Her chin wobbled and her lips tugged down. He saw her as she gritted her teeth and blinked several times.

"Giselle," he said, "this has to happen. You don't have to be involved. But I have to find who did this, or I'll never be able to rest."

She shook her head softly. "He's not coming back."

"No, he's not. But his killer doesn't deserve to live a peaceful life."

She closed her eyes for a moment, took a deep breath, and looked at him with glossy eyes. She whispered, "Okay."

He nodded and turned back to Alex. "I'm sure you must be tired. Stay here as long as you need."

"Nah, man. I've booked a room at Sheraton."

"And what's wrong with my home?"

"It's not luxury."

Chris and Giselle shared a look.

"You, Giselle, are welcome to stay with me if you want," said Alex.

"Cut it out!" Chris hadn't meant to sound harsh but couldn't help it. He looked at Giselle who smiled at him warmly.

"Just harmless fun," Alex mumbled, got up, and headed out before saying, "I'll update you, Chris. Savvy?"

Once Alex was gone, Giselle turned to Chris with a smile. "He's...something."

"Tell me about it."

"I think I just did."

He narrowed his eyes. "You're such a—"

"—smart-ass. Yeah, I know." She grinned, revealing her pointed teeth.
