"How shallow do you think I am?"

He sighed. "Then what's it about?"

"I can't believe you don't get it!"

"I'll get it if you tell me."

"Honestly, if you don't know what the issue is, why am I even bothering?" She looked away.

"Bothering with me?" he asked.

"Wow! Great way to turn it around on me." She shook her head.

He puffed out his cheeks for a moment, thinking, trying to control the situation. "Look, I don't know why it's spiraling out of control, but can you just please tell me what I've done to upset you?"

She opened her mouth and then closed it as if hurt. "Can't you see the way you're talking to me? You've even raised your voice."

"That's what it's about? The tone of my voice?"

"Yes, you're treating me with disrespect!"

"What?" He stood up. "I've never treated you with disrespect. You were upset before I even opened my mouth!"

"Yeah, so don't you know why I was upset? Or are you blind to that aspect?"

"Abby." He steadied his voice and walked toward her. He kneeled and looked up at her as he said, "Just tell me what the issue is."

She waited, staring down at his face. A few moments passed by, and then she said in a small voice, "You're always with Giselle."

His eyebrows merged. "That's the problem? She's grieving, Abby. She's my best friend."

"I know, okay? I'm not insensitive. I get it. But she's a friend, right? I'm the girlfriend. I should be more important."

He noticed how Abby talked more with her hands, gesturing every word than she did with her mouth. He said, "You are important."

"I said," she paused, gritting her teeth, "I should bemoreimportant."

He sighed. "You both are important to me in different ways."

She squinted as if that was the last thing she wanted to hear. "Who would you choose?"

"What?"

"Between the two of us, who would you choose if you had to?"

"It's not a competition! It's not a comparison. You both have different places in my life, and I don't see a reason to choose!"

He stood up again, unable to believe that he was having this conversation with someone he'd only dated less than a month.

She rolled her eyes. "That's not an answer to my question."

He could feel his temper rising. "Your question doesn't make sense."

"Now you're just being mean!"

"Abby, what do you want? Why are you doing this?" He didn't expect a straight answer.

"I'm not important to you!" Her eyes filled up with tears, and he instantly felt guilty. "You're always with her. You hug her differently. You talk to her differently. It's as if your life revolves around her. Does she have no self-respect? She should realize that you're in a committed relationship. She should back away!"
