A surge of hot energy ran through his body. He gave himself one more night to gather the strength and then he'd leave. The smart thing was to go into hiding like Stewart, but Xavier couldn't think straight. His only thought was stuck on the girl he loved. He was going to Phoenix to see Giselle.

It was all that mattered.

Chris sat across Abby in a black tuxedo.

She'd straightened her hair for the date and wore a red silk dress, a beige fur shawl over it.

"So, this is a fancy date," said Abby, tucking a strand of hair behind her ear.

He blinked. "I wanted to apologize for my behavior."

"And I'm here because I accepted it." Her lips stretched into a smile, which he returned with his own.

His eyes searched for the waiter. It had been twenty minutes, the order hadn't arrived, and he was starting to feel impatient.

He looked back at Abby. She was pretty. He could see the extra effort she'd put into her looks.

Her skin glowed, but it didn't have the rosiness of Giselle's cheeks.

Her hair was sleek, but it didn't frame her face effortlessly the way Giselle's did.

She wore hazel lenses, but they didn't mesmerize him the way the green of Giselle's eyes did.

Her lips were perfectly red with her lipstick, but then why did Chris miss Giselle's goofy smile?

"I'll take it as a compliment."

"What?" He snapped out of his thoughts.

"You're staring at me," she said, grinning. "I'll take it as a compliment."

He chuckled. "You look beautiful, Abby."

She glowed. "Thank you."

Chris breathed in and softly shook his head. "I'm sorry. I should've never talked to you that way. I don't know what came over me." He stretched out his hand on the table, palm up.

Abby gave her hand in his and smiled. "It's okay. I understand. You can't hear bad about Giselle. She's like your sister, I get it."

"It's not about her, it's just—"

"Yeah, you're right," Abby cut him off. "Let's not talk about her. It'sournight."

Chris looked down at his hand holding Abby's and nodded. "Yeah, okay."

They sat at the balcony table, waiting for their order in silence. Chris looked to his right and saw the city lights. The restaurant they were at was located on a mountaintop, offering a view of the whole city underneath.

It was the same restaurant his father had visited with his stepmother. On the way back, their car had run over the edge. They'd both died.

When he'd called Abby earlier today, asking her to choose where she wanted to go, she'd named this place. He couldn't refuse. Now that he was here, his chest felt tight, and he wanted to run away, but he told himself that he was strong enough to get through this date at least.

He convinced himself that his silence and his negativity were because he was there. It had nothing to do with the woman in front of him or the conversation they'd had before.

And it had nothing to do with missing his best friend.

Then why couldn't he control that one racing thought in his head? Was Giselle okay?
