Warmth crawled up to her cheeks. "I didn't say I missed you." She bit her lip.

"Why?" He leaned back, adjusted himself, and half lay on the sofa. "You've always been vocal about missing me."

She looked down. He was right. She'd always told him that she missed him, then why was it embarrassing for her to admit it this time? Why did it feel like it would reveal a secret?

"Hello?" called Chris. "You don't seem okay, Elle. What's wrong?"

She looked at him, worry etched all over his face. It made her smile. "I'm okay, butthead."

Chris raised his brows, then snorted. "That's a new one."

"Hmm, should've said something sassier!" She bit her lip again, but couldn't suppress the grin.

He shook his head, smiling. Closing his eyes, he threw his head back and groaned. "Agh, my head hurts."

Giselle pulled her knees in and hugged her legs, her back resting on the headboard. "You've been complaining about that a lot."

"I don't know. Maybe it's the stress of work."

"Do you want coffee?"

"Nah, I'm full." He raised his head and looked at her. "You want me to make some for you?"

She squinted at him. "Aren't you too tired for that?"

"Not for my girl." He leaned in, resting his elbows on his knees, and offered her a boyish, lop-sided smile.

Her heart swelled to the point of bursting. "I'll ask Ana to make it."

"Wow. You're hurting me," he mocked, placing his hand over his heart. "You've never liked anyone's coffee except mine."

She shrugged. "Things change. It's time for Abby to enjoy your coffee."

His eyebrows merged, all humor evaporating. "Why are you saying that? Why not you, too?"

She shrugged, blinking twice.

He sighed, staring at her for a long time, then spoke in a voice barely audible, "I miss you."

"I'm right here," she whispered, hugging her legs tighter.

He gulped. "Are you?"

It took her a moment to respond, "I don't know. I'm just tired."

He stared some more, then nodded, his face blank. "I know."

"I feel exhausted. I wanna sleep, Chris." She smiled, but barely.

He waited, then said, "Or you wanna run away?"

She looked down. "Yeah. Or the walls to close in and trap me."

"Or the floor to consume you."

"Or the sky to take me away."

He stayed silent, so she looked at him.
