She frowned. "What's wrong?"

"What do you mean?"

"You're not looking at me."

He stayed silent, eyes on the road.

"Is there something amiss?" she asked.

"No, Giselle." Her name sounded different on his lips today. She could feel it in the air—the fact that this night was going to change everything.

"Do I not look appropriate?" she asked, then gasped. "Oh no, I forgot my shawl!"

He sighed. "You look appropriate, and it's gonna be warm inside. Even if it's not, I got you."

She smiled. "Just appropriate?"

He stayed silent.

"Shrek!"

"What?" He grinned at the nickname.

"You're pissing me off."

"Am I?"Sarcasm.

"Look at me."

"No."

Her mouth fell open. "No?"

He shook his head.

It made her giggle. He was being ridiculous. "Look at me, Chris."

He took a turn on the road. "Not happening."

"Why not?"

He stayed silent.

She raised her voice as she said, "Why not?"

"Because!"

"Because what?"

"I don't wanna cause an accident."

"What?" She laughed. "What's that supposed to mean?"

He shrugged.

"Look at me."

"Giselle..." It was a warning.
