“Oh, my goodness, are you all right?” he asked, putting a hand on my arm and looking up at me solicitously. It seriously did not help.

“What-what are you wearing?” I finally managed to wheeze.

“Oh. Do you like it? I’m so glad. I thought you might, but I wasn’t sure.” He did a little pirouette then, giving me an excellent, up-close view of his delectable ass along with a huge smile.

The trousers—if they could be called that—wereobscenelytight and molded to his body. I think they weren’t even pants, but something called leggings, and I’d previously seen their like only on prepubescent girls. They were made of some dark blue, faux velvet material and hugged the curves of his sexy little ass like a second skin. When he turned, every bit of his anatomy was fully on display. The shirt he wore didn’t help. It came down only to his waist, the better for showing off his assets, no doubt, and it was cut low in front and was a lighter shade of blue. His boots had a little stacked heel and were shiny black.

I opened my mouth to tell him to go change immediately into something—anything—else, but he touched my arm again and said, “I’m so glad you approve of what I’m wearing. I really wanted to look nice for you,” he said, his beautiful eyes looking up at me hopefully. “I was afraid I’d embarrass you because I don’t have many nice clothes. Thank you so much for liking my outfit. It means so much to me.”

Well, shit.

I couldn’t let him go out of the house looking the way he did, though. I’d have to kill someone, and I wasn’t going to spend my entire evening disposing of bodies. But how could I tell him to change? I loved the way he looked, but the outfit was fit only forme. For the bedroom. My bedroom, behind closed doors.

While I stood there, running several different responses through my head, he smiled and said, “Let me get my jacket.” He turned to a coat rack by the door and then pulled on a jacket made of the same faux velvet material as his pants. It came to mid-thigh, covering him nicely, so I was a big fan, though to be truthful, he looked more than a little “Elton John inspired” by the outfit. Still, I was thrilled with it.

“You look very nice,” I told him, helping him on with the coat and buttoning him up in it all the way to his chin. I got a sweet smile in return.

“You look really nice too,” he said, a shy smile lighting up his face. I swear to the gods he batted his eyelashes at me, and my knees went weak.

I gave him my arm to escort him to the car, where Kyle was waiting to open the door for us and keeping his face carefully blank. I knew he’d had a glimpse of Jax when he first opened the door—I’d heard the loud gasp—but my glare dared him to acknowledge it in any way. It wasn’t worth his life for him to mention it.

“Did you get the flowers I sent?” I asked, after we got under way.

“Oh yes, but you didn’t have to send me so many. Though they’re really beautiful,” he rushed to add, as if he were afraid he might hurt my feelings.

“I’m glad you liked them.” I hesitated and then decided to jump right in. “I’m sorry about the doctor thing.”

“Oh…yes, well…I do have my own physician, and I take my omega pills.”

“I understand that now. It’s just that your scent, though very nice, you understand, is really strong to me. Not to anyone else though, apparently. I’m sorry—this true mate business is all entirely new to me.”

“It is to me too. But maybe just ask me next time? If you have any questions?”

“Of course.”

“And is now a good time to talk about my lease?”

“Let’s wait until we have dinner, if you don’t mind. But you don’t have to worry about any of that anymore. Just ignore the eviction notice. Everything will continue the way it always has.”

“But why?” he said, turning toward me. “Don’t get me wrong, I’m happy. But what made you change your mind?”

“I, uh, thought about what you told me and reconsidered.”

“Just like that?” His eyes searched my face, and I kept it carefully blank.

“Yes.”

A silence dropped down between us that was so heavy I thought I could hear the thud as it hit the floorboard. It wasn’t that I had nothing to say to him—I had endless questions about every facet of his life. I wanted to hear his complete history and know what he liked and didn’t like about music and books and movies and so many things. In fact, I was afraid that once I got started, I wouldn’t be able to stop, so I sat silently beside him, very aware of every move he made and every breath he took.

“So, where are we going for dinner?” he asked, changing the subject and jarring the death-like silence that had fallen over the back seat.

“I…there’s actually been a slight change of plans.”

“Oh?”

“I forgot I had a previous engagement, so I was wondering if you’d mind if we stopped by a holiday party first. Just for an hour or so. There are sure to behors d’oeuvresif you’re hungry. We won’t stay long and afterwards, we can go to dinner.”

“A party?”
