“Why do I get the feeling you have something on your mind, Jax? Was it something the doctor said? Josh told me you acted upset when you came out of the office.”

He frowned with irritation. “Well, Josh is just a fount of information, isn’t he?”

“He was concerned about you.”

“Hmm,” he said, not looking at all mollified. “I’m not his business, though, am I?”

“Will you at least acknowledge that you aremybusiness?”

He took a few moments too long to give me a shrug. I stared at him long enough that he started twitching.

“What’s wrong?” I asked him, reaching out to take his hand again.

“Nothing,” he snapped, pulling his hand quickly away. He got up to take the pie and put it back on the counter and whirled around to stare at me.

“Okay, maybe there is something.”

I tried to look encouraging and made a little go-ahead gesture so that he sank back down in the chair across from me.

“You have to wear a condom,” he said, a little too loud and raising his chin defiantly.

“I see. Can I wait until after I have some pie?”

He flushed a bright red. “It’s not funny, Dominic.”

“No. I’m not finding a great deal of humor in it myself, actually. Could you possibly explain what brought this on?”

“The-the doctor said the stories about an omega not having much protection against his true mate are all true. Because that must be what we are. True mates. That’s why the secretions started back up, and the pills don’t work on me anymore.”

“Are you sure of that? Did you ask the doctor?”

“Yes, and he said it was probably true for dragons anyway, though no one knows exactly.”

“But we both already suspected that, didn’t we?”

“Yes, but…I didn’t know about the pregnant thing. Well, I did, but I thought it was just stories.” He started wringing his hands a little, and I didn’t think he was aware of it. “The doctor ran a few tests that I should hear back from tomorrow. But he said, in the meantime, if I didn’t want to get pregnant, then you need to wear a condom.”

“And I assume this is your way of telling me you don’t want to get pregnant?”

“No!” he shouted, looking agitated as he began pacing around the tiny kitchen. “I mean, yes.” He shook his head. “I don’t want to have a baby. Not now anyway.”

“I see. Is it necessary to tell me all this without so much volume, do you think?”

But he was on a roll now and there was apparently no stopping him. He ignored my comment completely.

“Like I told you, I want to make my shop a success! I want to get more contracts with the studio and be able to buy my contract from my father, so I don’t have to go in the omega auctions. You know this!”

“Jax, calm down.” I knew it was a mistake to ever tell an omega, or anyone really, to calm down. It usually had the opposite effect. Yet I did it anyway—twice. “Calm down, please.”

“Don’t yell at me to calm down!”

“I apologize, and I’m not yelling. But Jax, why do you think I’d allow you to ever be auctioned off? Surely you realize I would never allow that to happen.”

“But I don’t want you to have to save me. I want to be the one to do it for myself! I’m a man and I’m my own person!” he said, really shouting at me now. His beautiful face was turning bright red. “I can do this myself. I don’t want to have some big strong Alpha rushing to my rescue!”

I was trying hard to hold onto my temper, but it had been a long day, and I wasn’t particularly known for my patience. He was yelling at me for no particular reason, and I could sympathize, but I didn’t like it. Because I hadn’t done anything. I got to my feet and walked into the living room. If he wanted to keep shouting then he could go ahead, but I didn’t have to listen to it. He came after me anyway.

“What are you doing? Are you just walking away from me?”
