Rafael nodded.

“Hmm.” What else could he say without revealing his and Emily’s relationship?

“She might be your type. Easy on the eyes and great in bed.” Rafael winked. “You should take advantage of her crush.”

“I thought you hadn’t seen her in years.”

Rafael shrugged and Mark busied himself looking at his phone, clenching his jaw to keep from saying something he shouldn’t.

They secured their violins in the lockers of the green room and headed out to the lobby. Mark searched the area to make sure Emily and David had escaped and saw no trace of either of them. He sighed in relief and smiled as people approached.

“You sure it’sokay we left the concert so quickly?” Emily asked as she walked out of her hotel bedroom having changed into a pair of yoga pants and a t-shirt.

“Yes, Emily. It’s fine.” David chuckled. “I wouldn’t have done it if it wasn’t okay. I have all week to schmooze the studios. Besides, I’m exhausted.”

“But—”

“Emily, if you ask me again, I’m going to bend you over my knee and spank you.”

Emily bit her lip. “I thought you weren’t into that sort of thing.”

He chuckled. “I’m normally not, but with you, it might be fun.” He shook his head. “I’m not going anywhere near thatidea because I’m your boss and I promised you I wouldn’t.”

She sat on the couch next to him and picked at her fingernails. “I don’t know how Mark will react to... you and me.”

“Me being your boss?”

Emily frowned and sighed. “You know what I mean.” Now that she knew how she felt about Mark, her past weighed heavily on her shoulders and she wished more than anything she wasn’t who she was. That she really was just David’s assistant.

“There’s only one way to find out.” David patted her hand. “Stop worrying. Everything will work out the way it should.”

“How can you say that?” She stared at him, her eyes wide.

“Well, I think this trip is good for you.” He held up his hand when she started to protest. “You have to face your past before you can move on with your future, with or without Mark. You can’t keep running and hiding. Just remember, you’re not alone in your fight anymore.” He smiled and tilted his head. “Mark cares a great deal about you. As do I. We will be with you every step of the way.”

“Why?”

“Because you deserve a chance at happiness, Emily. You’re an amazing young woman and I want to see you become who you were meant to be.”

Emily curled on the couch next to David as he turned on the TV. He patted her knee and flipped through the channels until he found a show on the history of France. “Is this okay?”

Emily nodded. “I like history.”

David smiled. “Me too.” He slid his fingers over the tablet on his lap, bringing the electronic to life, and frowned. “I should go over my notes.” He ran his hand over his face and sighed.

“Are you okay?”

“Yeah, just...” He sighed. “Trying to wrap my head around everything.”

“Me?” Guilt burned in her chest again.

He gave her a sympathetic smile. “A little. And adjusting my expectations for this week, both professionally and personally.” He shook his head. “Normally these conferences are a breeze, but... Well, I’m glad I’m here and not Robert.”

“Your VP of sales?”

David nodded.
