Of course she would. “What about lunch? Tomorrow?”

“Don’t you have rehearsal?”

He shook his head. But he did have the photo shoot with Maestro. “Late lunch tomorrow?”

“Maybe...”

“How about lunch and then we can listen somewhere quiet?” Her eyes widened and he scolded himself. “I didn’t mean... I mean, I did, but not...”Shit. He had meant to go back to his place, but not for sex. Only on his top-of-the-line stereo system at home did the piece have any chance of being fully appreciated, if there was anything to appreciate.

Her expression hardened. “I should go.”

“Emily!”

She looked both ways, hurried across the street, and almost got hit by a car.

“Emily!” He ran after her. A car horn honked and someone cursed at him.

She was speed-walking through the park and he had to jog to catch up.

“Emily, wait.”

She turned and glared at him. “Is that how you get all the women? Lure them up with the ‘somewhere quiet’ thing?”

“I don’t usually have to lure anyone.”

She stared.

He glared.

Then she laughed. “Well, at least you’re honest.”

“I try.”

“Really?”

He shrugged. “Most of the time. My father drilled honesty into me, at least with the important things.”

“Are you saying you’re not one hundred percent honest with everything, all the time?”

“Are you?”

“Is anyone?”

Mark laughed. “I like you.”

Her cheeks turned pink and she looked away. But she didn’t run away.

“Okay, here’s the thing. I have an amazing stereo system at my place and if the piece hasanyredeeming qualities, you’re more likely to hear it there instead of through headphones or, God-forbid, a phone speaker.”

She searched his eyes again. “That’s it?”

“That’s what?”

“That’s why you hinted about going back to your place?”

“Yeah.”

“Because I won’t sleep with you.”
