“Why’d you tell me?”

“I don’t know.”

“Am I bad for your memory?”

He laughed. “I did promise I wouldn’t seduce you, yet I kissed you.”

“You didn’t do anything else.”

He nodded, raising his eyebrows. “True.”

“Are you going to break your promise?”

He shook his head.

They stared at each other. She liked him.

He wasn’t what she’d imagined him to be when she was younger.

He was real.

He was kind and funny. She had enjoyed listening to his touring stories during lunch.

He was comfortable, though she didn’t understand why.

He was a celebrity. Yet he’d asked for her help.

He was an enigma.

He still stared at her.

“Will you tell me the truth if I ask you a question?” he asked, breaking the silence.

“Why?”

“I told you the truth about my dad.”

“I didn’t ask.”

“I know.”

The room grew silent again.

“What do you want to know?” she asked in a soft voice.

“Are you a violinist?”

She chewed her lip and stared at him for a long moment before shaking her head. “Not anymore.”

“But you were?”

She nodded and closed her eyes, but opened them again when he didn’t say anything else. “No more questions?”

He grinned. “I have tons, but you don’t want to answer any more, right?”

She shook her head.

“I’ll wait until next time.”
