Mark growled. “Find out what you can about her. Please.”

“I thought you knew everything about her we could find. Why?”

“Please, Sam?”

“Okay, okay. It might take me some time.”

“How ‘bout we meet in an hour instead?”

“You think I can find out more today?”

“Find what you can.” He ended the call and took a breath before opening the bedroom door and walking inside. Abby lifted her head, questions in her eyes. “I have to go meet Sam. Something about next year’s tour.”

Abby pushed out her lip. “I thought you were settling here in the city.”

Mark shrugged. “I don’t know what’s going on. That’s why I need to talk to him.” He motioned to the bed. “You guys can stay as long as you want, but I gotta shower and meet him in a bit.” He headed toward the bathroom door.

“Mark?”

Mark stopped and turned back to Abby. “Yeah?”

“You like Emily, don’t you?”

“Why do you say that?”

“You weren’t yourself today.” She sat up on her elbow. “It’s okay if you do. You deserve someone special in your life.”

“You’re special, Abby.”

She laughed. “I appreciate that, hon. But you know what I mean. If you like her, go for it. I’ve known you a long time and never seen you look at a woman like you did at her.”

Mark chewed the inside of his lip. “I wish I knew more about her. She’s determined to keep me at arm’s length.”

“You’ll win her over. You’re too charming not to.”

Mark chuckled. “Thanks, Abs.”

Twenty-Six

Mark wanderedaround the city until it was time to meet Sam at his favorite diner. He picked a table in the back and ordered a coffee while he waited for his agent to show up. Which he did. Fifteen minutes later.

“Sorry I’m late,” Sam said, setting his tablet on the table as he sat down. “I was looking into the girl.” The waitress appeared and he ordered a coffee. “Nothing has happened since the last time you asked about her.”

“That was years ago.”

Sam shrugged. “She’s still a missing person.” He double-tapped the tablet and the device came to life. “Emma Parker. Daughter of Joseph Parker, musical producer for many of the Hollywood blockbusters. She was a talented musician, which you know already, and disappeared the night before her first class at Juilliard.”

“How can someone just disappear like that?”

Sam gave him a sympathetic look. “It happens to thousands of girls and women each year. She was young and pretty. It’s not unreasonable she was taken. Unfortunately.”

“She wasn’t taken. She left. She took the strings off her violin and removed the soundpost. She did it for a reason.”

“Why do you say that?”

Mark hesitated. Why had he said that? What made him so certain? Did he dare tell Sam? “I think I may have found her,” he said in a low voice.

“What? There’s a multi-million-dollar reward for her return!”
