“I-I was w-with M-Mark.”

Geoffrey clenched his jaw. “I think you’re spending an awful lot of time with him. That might be dangerous.”

Emily’s jaw trembled. “No, I—” She closed her eyes. “Nothing is going on. He offered and I couldn’t resist.”

“Are you fucking him?”

Her eyes snapped open. “No, of course not!”

Geoffrey studied her face. “You want to.”

She shook her head. “I don’t. I—” She looked down. “He’s nice.”

He snorted. “You should know better than that, Emily.”

“It felt good to play,” she whispered. “That’s it. I promise.”

“You’re saying you don’t have any feelings for him?”

Emily swallowed. “I’ve had a crush on him since I was twelve.”

He narrowed his eyes and stared down at her. “You belong to me, Emily. I hope you haven’t forgotten.”

“I know,” she whispered.

He stared at her for a moment longer. “If it becomes an issue, I will take care of him.”

“I know,” she whispered again, wondering if it was worth it. She’d never forgive herself if anything happened to Mark. “It won’t. I promise.”

“Though I can’t deny you’re more attractive when you’re happy.” He pursed his lips, then turned and walked away.

Emily stared at him for a long moment, rubbing her neck, then hurried back into the dining room.

Thirty-Five

Mark tossedand turned all night, trying to figure out what to do about Emily. The only thing he knew for sure was that he had to do something with the knowledge he had. As much as he turned things over in his head, no solid plan came to mind. He supposed he could go to the media about it...

He shook his head. Emily could end up in a worse situation if it was discovered she was the one who told an outsider. Too many powerful people patronized the place, and they were far more influential than himself.

As the sun peeked through the curtains of his bedroom, he made a decision. He sat up, grabbed his phone, tapped through several screens, and waited as the phone rang a few times for his godfather to answer.

“Kunze.”

“Hallo, Alex, it’s Mark,” he said in German.

“Mark, how are you?” Alex replied in German.

They spent a few minutes exchanging small talk and then Alex chuckled. “What’s going on, Mark? You usually don’t call this early in the morning.”

“It’s afternoon there!”

“Early morning for you. You aren’t a morning person.”

Alex wasn’t wrong. “I’ve got something on my mind I thought you might be able to help me with.”

“You know I will if I can.”

Mark told him about Emily, her family, and what he knew of her abuse. “If I had your skill set, I’d bust in and take her out of there, but... I’m not you.”
