“Do you think the Family will let him live?” one says.

“No way,” the other says. “Once they get all the information they want out of him…he’s dead.”

Shit. That’s not good.

I have to get in touch with him.

And because I can’t think of anything else to do, I reach toward the tracker in my leg.

I tap the rhythm he told me—SOS in morse code. I hear an intake of breath in my comm, then muttered words.

I hear you.

Then nothing.

The people in the compound are still talking in my ear, discussing what they’re going to do with Zaire and Layla, while the men on the ship talk about what they’ll do with Corvus. I’m the only asset theydon’tknow about, I realize.

So I have to help the team.

I start to catalogue my arsenal right then and there. I’ve got Marina’s dagger in my sleeve, ready to go; Corvus’ tracker in my thigh. I’ve also still got the earrings Corvus gave me, each stud with a dose of sedative.

I can take out at least five people with this, especially if I’m fast and quiet.

I can do this.

Then the whole situation gets worse.

The ship starts to move.

My stomach lurches as I feel the artificial gravity kick in, and I realize the ship is going to another hangar. I don’tthinkwe’re leaving the compound—I hope we aren’t, at least. We’re still in the hangar, as far as I can tell.

I have to kill these men before they move the ship, otherwise Layla, Corvus, and Zaire will have no way out.

I move the panel aside and sit up, peeking carefully over the edge of the crate. I can see through the front window that we’re still in the hangar—but we might not be for much longer. Without a second thought, I crawl out of the crate and land light on my feet, sliding Marina’s dagger out of my sleeve.

There are two Aelyds at the controls, one with cast iron skin like Corvus and the other with silver scales. They’re seated in the pilot’s and co-pilot’s seats; they have no idea I’m here. I move toward them, staying low, ready to strike…

I move.

My right arm swings forward and I find the pilot’s pulse, shoving the point of the blade in deep and then withdrawing it. Crimson blood splashes against the silver Aelyd’s tunic, and he looks up at me in horror just in time for me to give him a sharp uppercut to the chin. The blade slides into his throat, and I wince as I pull the blade out with a sickening splatter.

They’re both dead within seconds.

I just got my Dark Veil.

CHAPTER FORTY-SIX

?

CORVUS

The compound feels darker and smaller than before. The walls are thick enough to keep the heat out all year round, which makes the temperature in the compound perpetually icy. We barely have any windows, and they’re built into the wall so they’re completely modular. The windows themselves are only open for important events—like when a baby is born. So I know they’re there but I’ve never seen them open, which means that I don’t think Layla Dara would be able to leave, no matter how hard she tried to escape.

There are no exits other than the one at the front and the walls would be impossible to scale even for an Aelyd. If Layla is approximately the same size as Penn is, there’s absolutely no chance she could climb out of here. She would have to get to the elevator in the first place and that would mean breaking out of the cell she’s kept in.

I know exactly where she is after the two guards walked me to the elevator. There are several cells in the floor below, but only one where we keep women. I’m aware that guards might still be monitoring us, so I keep a hold of Zaire’s cuffs as we walk toward the end of the long corridor, where the largest cell is.

It’s a good thing I do. A guard rounds the corner, a spear at his back and a weapon at his hip.
