Even with weapons, though, we’re still outnumbered.

The man Zaire has just disarmed is angry enough to pick his head up and try to ram it against him, while the rest of the party clearly only has eyes for Layla.

She’s a good shot, but she has to back away with every movement, and if they manage to get past us, we’re not going to be able to do much for her. She’ll go back in her cell, more Diavolos will be sent down here, and she’s going to pay for this escape attempt.

And if they find Penn…I don’t even want to think about it.

Using the sharp end of the spear, I manage to pierce Elan, who is going toward Zaire. I’m not trying to kill him; not until he turns to me and grabs the weapon with his bare hands, trying to tug it away from me. He screams with anger, his eyes flashing red.

He’s strong, but it’s hard for him to get enough leverage to grab it. I think I’m about to pull it away from him when I feel someone’s arm around my throat, pressing hard enough to cut off my breathing.

I writhe around, trying my best to shake my attacker off, using my weak Gift to send an electrical current down his limb. His arm only tightens around me, which makes it hard to hold on to anything. The spear is a clumsy, long weapon, and it’s very difficult to try and get an attacker who is right behind me.

I look at Zaire, who is still fighting the attackers that are coming for us, my gaze darting as I try to find Layla. Then I hear a loud pop right behind me, my attacker falling down to the floor behind me.

Layla glares at him. “C’mon,” she says. “Get his gun.”

I do what she tells me, and after the three of us are armed, we make quick work of the four remaining guards. After they’ve seen what we did, it feels like they’re too scared to approach us. Maybe they’re just too scared to approachher.

They have no issue killing us, but Layla…she’s pregnant. She’s valuable. She’s a commodity.

And she knows exactly what she is, because she has no issues firing her gun. She must be terrified—fuck,I’mterrified—but she doesn’t mind wielding the power she has. The first man, with golden skin, falls noisily on the floor, and Zaire and I shoot at the men left near the elevator as they try to duck out of the way.

In a split second, the men fall into heaps on the floor, and the only thing blocking our way to the elevator are their folded bodies at our feet.

“Let’s go,” I say. The elevator is still open, one of the guard’s legs stopping it from being called. “We don’t want to be here when they send the next party.”

Layla pulls Zaire into the elevator after she hands us more guns, so we’re all able to wield dual weapons . He kicks the legs out of the way, the doors closing in front of us.

“Okay,” she says. “I’m really glad you guys are here. To rescue me, obviously. But honestly, that’s the most fun I’ve had in months.”

Zaire laughs, pulling her into an embrace, and I feel a tug at the corner of my lips.

I can definitely see why Penn cares so much for this woman.

CHAPTER FORTY-SEVEN

?

PENN

No one comes to find my victims, which leads me to believe I’m in the clear.

My team, however, seems to be in trouble.

Guards crowd around the threshold where I saw Corvus and Zaire disappear roughly twenty minutes ago, every second getting longer. I hold my breath as I think about what I’ll do if they don’t escape—if they don’t get Layla—and I can’t think of a single thing.

Could I fight my way through this compound alone?

Maybe…but I don’t want to.

My hands fall to the controls for the mounted turrets on the front of the ship. There’s just the one, and I should be careful using it in such a confined space, but the troops gathered at the door are enough to convince me that I need to take action. I need to do this now if I want to fire before my friends show up, but once I do, it will draw attention to the ship…then it’s game on.

I have four weapons at my disposal—my earrings, my dagger, and the gun one of the guards dropped.

I’ve got this.

I turn on the ship and the engine spins to life. It attracts a few suspicious glances, and when I line the turret up with the door, I see a few of the guards shout in alarm.
