Keon, it turns out, is not just an expert in music, but an expert in aftercare.

He carries me to his room, cradling me in his arms and taking me through a series of sliding doors. I realize this is where he brought me when we first got here, and only appreciate now how colorful it is. Atlas’ style is neutral tones and straight lines, but Keon’s room is draped in colorful tapestries and filled with art, flowers, and vines. He’s even got a fishtank taking up an entire wall, alien marine life drifting through the blue water and aquatic reeds.

He puts me down on the bed with the kind of gentleness I would never have expected after how rough he was. I find that I’m actually a little sore, even though my whole body is still tingling, post-coital euphoria overwhelming my senses.

“You need water,” Keon says, walking away from me. He sheds his shirt as he goes, tossing it to the floor. A drone—which looks somewhat like a slightly sleeker roomba—whizzes out to pick it up. Keon passes through a curtain and I hear a faucet running.

I take the opportunity to look around, though I don’t bother standing up. His bed is unmade, a velvety purple blanket the only thing covering the silken black sheets. The bed is huge—I think all the beds in the compound are—and I imagine all the orgies he’s had here.

I’m just guessing, but he seems like the orgy type.

He comes back out with a glass in hand, now wearing only a black robe tied around the waist. His golden skin is still glossy, but it doesn’t gleam quite as bright; I think that means he’s tired. He passes me the glass and I take it with a thank you, drinking the whole thing in one go.

Keon takes it back and puts it down on a side table, reaching out to take my hand.

“You should bathe,” he says.

“I should,” I agree.

He helps me to my feet, and I kick off my shoes before walking with him through another curtain, finding a massive jacuzzi tub on the other side. It’s already filling with hot water, and I glance at him in curiosity.

“It automatically runs when I get back from a show,” he explains. “I tend to get pretty filthy.”

“Oh,” I say. “Cool trick.”

I feel completely spent, and yet somehow unsatisfied. As I think about it, I know exactly why: because Keon wasn’t the one I wanted first, or most.

It’s Atlas.

Forbidden fruit and all that.

“You’re actually starting to like him, aren’t you?” Keon asks. I look over to find him smiling as he shrugs out of his robe, revealing a gloriously naked body. I was so fixated on Atlas, but Keon really is gorgeous. His muscles are lean and sleek, pale golden skin shining on every inch of him. His cock is flaccid, but still long, dangling between his legs.

I lick my lips, letting my eyes linger at his waist.

“Yeah,” I say. “I am.”

Keon walks over to me, then helps me unzip my dress. My limbs are like jelly, so I let him go through the motions of aftercare: making sure I’m hydrated, undressing me, putting me in the bath. I don’t think he’s just play acting—he actually cares, gentleness in every touch. He eases me into the tub and joins me a moment later, turning a spigot to let bubbles cover the surface.

“I don’t think you’re going to be able to kill him,” Keon says. “There’s something about him that just…begets kindness.”

“But you tried,” I interject, gazing at him.

“And I failed—obviously,” Keon says. “Don’t get me wrong; Atlas is a complex person, who has done some very bad things. But he’s a good man, at his core.”

“Is that why you’ve let me get close to him?” I ask. “If you know my mission, then why not tell him and kill me?”

Keon snorts, then turns around. I don’t know where they came from, but two more glasses of water sit behind him, and he passes one over to me. I take it and gulp the whole thing down once again.

I’ve been using up a lot of my hydration, okay?

“Because I like you and I don’t want you dead,” Keon says.

I scowl. “I know it’s not that simple. You’re more calculated than that.”

“Fair,” he says. “In that case…because I’m gambling.”
