“What else does she know?” Trine asks him, her voice shaking.

She sounds scared. Really scared.

I don’t want to believe any of this, but I’m a man of science, and it’s hard to deny the facts.

Someone just made Trine practically choke on her own tongue just by touching her. I’ve seen her levitate. There are too many things I can’t explain, too many things about the last few days that I’ve been thinking about nonstop that I still can’t seem to figure out.

There are some things that are simply factual.

Trine is sick.

She’s getting worse.

I don’t know how to help her.

Things are getting worse, and now it looks like someone is actually trying to hurt her.

I don’t know if that makes it easier to cope with this. If it’s something–even if it sounds ridiculous, stupid, far-fetched, fake–at least I think there’s a way I can deal with that.

Uncertainty is part of my job. That doesn’t mean I’m good at dealing with it.

And when it comes to someone I care about…I’ve never learned how to do it. It’s as if my brain is simply unable to cope with the fact that nothing is ever certain, that everything is up in the air and that I have absolutely no answers.

There’s nothing I can do for Trine. There’s no way for me to help.

I can only stand by and wait until Luke and Misha and even Malon–who I guess might be a demon, if I were to take him at his word–try to help exorcise whatever evil is in her body while I try to be a soft place for her to land.

It’s maddening, not being able to do anything for her when I can normally help.

Malon is saying something, but I’m not paying attention to him. I watchTrine’s gaze flit around them instead. She wipes her face with the back of her hand, sniffling as she does. “So where do we go now?”

“What do you mean?” I ask her.

She furrows her brow as she looks at me. She seems concerned. “Mal said that she could look into his head, so she has all the information he has,” she says. “And she probably did the same thing with me.”

“That means we probably have to go into hiding,” Luke says. “Since Malon knows where you live.”

“Yeah,” Trine replies. She braces herself to get to her feet, so I hold my hands out so she can support herself. “He knows everything.”

Malon clears his throat. “If they’re coming after you physically, it’s really bad news,” he says. “It means they’re keeping tabs on you. They’re trying to wear you down on all fronts.”

“I don’t understand why anyone is so interested in me in the first place,” Trine replies. “My mom might have had something to do with this, but I don’t. I have nothing to do with any of this. I just want to go home and have nothing to do with demons. I want to go back to my regular life. I don’t want to deal with any of this.”

“I know it’s not fair,” I tell her. “And we can figure out all the logistics later, but right now, we need to keep you safe.”

She sighs, her shoulders slumping. She’s obviously so worn out by all of this. I can’t blame her for that. “Where are we going?” she asks softly, resigned.

“I don’t know yet,” I say. “Somewhere nice, hopefully.”

“Yeah,” Misha says, clearly getting the implication in my tone. “Somewhere nice.”

I put my arm around her shoulders and she leans her head against me, breathing heavily. A strand of her hair tickles my skin, but I don’t want to move. I want her to keep breathing, to keep walking slowly toward the back exit so that we can get the fuck out of here and never come back.

I don’t know why Malon brought her here. I don't want to know. All I know is that he put her in danger and we need to get her out of Blessing as soon as we can.

I pull Trine close to me. She’s so close her body is practically flush against mine. This isn’t like before, though–she’s clinging to me because she feels like she needs protection. It makes my stomach knot.

We walk slowly. I don’t care about what the other guys are doing. Right now, all I want to do is keep Trine safe.
