And that’ll drive them away from the exorcists.

That’ll keep them alive.

So as soon as it feels like the spell is broken and the crowd starts approaching me, I run as fast as I can.

Right into the pool.

REI

I’m horrified as I watch Trine jump into Alana’s pool. She’s fully clothed, and the pool has a bunch of red and yellow leaves floating on the surface. I’ve never seen Trine swim. I’ve never even asked her if she can.

I do know that it seems to deter the people going after her, at least somewhat. They stop at the edge of the pool, looking down at Trine. And then they go in, one by one. She does her best to avoid them, but there are a lot of them.

Misha jumps after her. No hesitation. He wades toward her, trying to get past the tons of people trying to get at her.

One of them–a young woman with short dark hair–reaches out to

I just stare, like a fucking idiot.

“Trine, get out of the pool!” Malon shouts after her.

I’m about to tell her to do the same thing, but Luke clasps a hand over my shoulder and shakes his head. “No,” he says. “It’s better if she stays in there.”

“What? Why?” Malon asks.

I don’t have to ask anything. I can see the intention in Luke’s eyes, clear as day.

“Back away, Malon,” I say. “You don’t want to get hurt.”

Luke practically cracks a smile. He doesn’t, though, not when he looks at what’s happening in the pool. Misha fights a couple of people that are trying to get to her, but he’s struggling.

Trine is struggling too. There’s not much time left and I want to jump in after her, too. I want to defend her. But I know that Luke needs me for this.

He leans down over the pool and takes a deep breath. There’s a split second where he seems to hesitate, but he crosses himself with his right hand and then dips it into the pool.

“Lord…”

“Oh, fuck, is he going to bless the water?”

“Shut up, Malon,” I say through gritted teeth as Luke continues with his prayer.

“Grant that those who are sprinkled with this water may be renewed in body and spirit and may make a pure offering of their service to you,” he recites. “We ask this through Christ our Lord.”

He looks at me, which I’m pretty sure means that I have to participate. “Amen?” I say.

Luke nods.

Something happens.

It’s nothing I can see, but I think something must change, since the people in the pool slowly move away from Trine and Misha, as if in a daze.

Trine grimaces as if she’s in pain. Misha grabs her by the waist and pulls her close to him, whispering something in her ear as she grits her teeth against any pain she might be feeling.

“What the fuck was that?” a guy with a ruined leather jacket says as he climbs out of the pool.

Everyone shakes themselves off. Some of these people don’t seem to be able to swim, so they’re helped by some of the other people around them. The cops finally arrive–I don’t know what the fuck they were doing before, it certainly seemed like they were working in slow motion–and then they finally arrive.

Light and red lights flash and flood over the back. Trine looks like she’s going to be sick as a tall cop approaches me. “What’s going on here?”
