Where the fuck is she? Normally she’s here barking out orders, acting superior, but now when I fucking need her, I can’t find her. I tear through the house at least a dozen times and she’s nowhere to be found.

I’m not paying attention to where I’m going when I run smack into Sebastian. “What the fuck, man?” His words are vicious like they’ve been since our mate was taken from us. Deep inside, I know he blames me. I should’ve protected her, sensed their arrival. But I was useless, caught up in the moment of heated passion.

“I’m looking for Tala. I got an idea, and I just need to check with her to see if it’s even possible,” I blurt out, pushing him out of my way so I can pass by him.

“She went with Damien to place wards around Janey’s house. We want to make sure we’re alerted if anyone gets near her,” he tells me as he grabs me by the shoulders to make sure I listen to what he has to say.

“How about the M&M twins? Are they here?”

“No, they went too. Something about increasing power and melding and shit. Fuck if I know what they were talking about. They left here about an hour ago.” Sebastian lets go of me, sensing he has my attention.

“What are you thinking? Whatever it is, I’m down. The longer she’s away from us, the more worried I get about what’s being done to her.” His shoulders sink as he talks. I love the man like a brother, and fuck, in a way we are, but he needs to be positive. I’m getting her back, we just need a foolproof plan.

“Magic! There has to be a way to use magic to get us inside the grounds, then once there, we can split into three recovery teams. Once we have all three of them, we can get the fuck out of there. As much as I want to kill the fuckers, my top priority is Shay, Beba, and Maverick.” He just nods his head in agreement at the last part. The battle will have to wait for another day.

“Fuck, you’re right. Why have we not thought about this before? Between Tala, the guys, and any other witches we can recruit in the rescue, it should work. I can move in and out pretty quickly as long as I know where I’m going. So I can at least get one person out with me. Will I be in the group for Shay?” He furrows his brows at me, with hope glimmering in his eyes.

“I don’t know yet, man. I know we all want to be the one to rescue her, but we need to spread out. He’s probably gonna expect us to all go for her and I’d rather him not have the whole mated group if the plan goes sideways.” I can see Sebastian wants to respond to my words. He keeps opening and closing his mouth until finally keeping his lips clenched together.

“I want to know specifically if there is a barrier around the compound and if there is a way to transport us inside,” I further explain to him.

“You mean like in thatPercy Jacksonmovie where they had to find Medusa's pearls to get out of the underworld?” Sebastian and his fucking movies.

“Kinda.” Honestly, it’s the only response I can give, not knowing if anything I’m thinking about really exists.

“I’m going to go back to the office and keep researching and going over the plans. Can you check with your family and see if we can get any help from them?” I’m hoping he has some people to back us up, too.

“Already on it man, Mom and Dad will be here tonight. They’re bringing along some people as well.” He lays his hand on my shoulder as I turn to head back to my office, walking along beside me.

“We’re going to need all the help we can get.” I move out from under his hold, speeding up my steps.

“I’m gonna see who else I can round up to help us. We’re gonna need an army even after we save them. We need to end this so there’s no future threat,” he shouts out to me, just as I step into my office. I don’t reply, just let the door close behind me as I make my way across the room, dropping down into my desk chair. A long, sigh escapes from me as I do.

Taking my hands, I rake them through my hair, gripping the tendrils as I rest my face in the palm of my hands. What fucking type of mate am I that I couldn’t protect her? My head knows it was out of my control. My heart knows that they took the moment we would be at our most vulnerable and used it to their advantage.

I don’t fucking plan to give them that advantage again!

I look at the blueprints of Michaelson’s compound over and over. Engraving every detail into my memory. The one thing we don’t know is where they’re keeping them. I hope to fucking god that Miles or Miguel can give some fucking insight.

I go over everything we need to do, ticking each one off in my head.

Get into the compound undetected.

Split into groups and find our people.

Get the fuck out of there with no one being injured or taken.

Get ready to win a war.

Yeah, I know it's not a very elaborate list, but it’s what we need to do. The tricky part of the rescue is knowing we need to get three of our people out. I can’t imagine Maverick’s dad mistreating him, being his son and all, but he’s also Shay’s mate, so we can’t leave him behind.

So I do what I do best, pour myself into the task at hand to keep from going crazy over things I can’t control.

I was still going through the books when Damien and the M&M twins dragged themselves into my office. The warlocks head straight for the liquor cabinet, making themselves a drink like they're at home. Damien moves to the chair across from my desk and drops into it, his eyes heavy and his shoulders slumped. He must have helped with the spell cast to increase the protection on Chelle.

“How was our girl?” I hate that I haven't been able to see her today. But getting her mommy back has taken all my time. I need to do this for her, for us. We need Shay more than we ever knew.

“She broke my damn heart, man.” His voice is low, and I can hear how he’s choking back tears.
