"But I am."

"Bonnie, I can take care of both you and the baby. You know that. You don’t even have to go to work if you don’t want to."

"That's not how I want to do things," she murmured. She was a proud woman. I got that and loved it. But even proud people needed to ask for help sometimes.

But I didn't have to win all fights right away. That was not my MO. I took wins as they came, and convincing her to stay with me for the weekend was a huge win in my book.

"We can go straight to your place, and while you wait in the car, I can pack a bag for you."

"No, that's not necessary. My friend Ashley has a key. I can tell her to pack a bag. She doesn't live far away. Then I can just ask her to meet us in front of the building."

"Do that. Are you sure Ashley's home?"

"Yes, I texted to ask her if she could come over later and help me with some things."

"You texted Ashley."

"Yes."

"Why didn't you text me?" I tried to keep the hurt out of my voice, but what the hell? First she called an Uber, then texted her friend. What was I, chopped liver?

"I don't know, Travis. It was my first instinct, and I followed that."

I stared at her, deciding not to push the issue for now.

"Fine. Text Ashley."

Ten minutes later,we were already in the car. When we reached Bonnie's building, a redhead with a huge suitcase stood in front of the building.

"Is that Ashley?" I asked.

"Yes. My God, what did she do, pack my whole apartment?"

"Kudos to Ashley. Stay in the car. I'll get it and put the bag in the trunk."

I stepped out of the car and walked over to Ashley.

"Hey, you must be Travis," she said, eyeing me up and down. "I've heard a lot about you."

"I am. Nice to meet you, Ashley. Thank you for packing Bonnie’s bag. I’m sure you did a better job than I would have."

"How's she feeling?"

As I was about to answer, I heard, "You can ask me yourself."

Turning around, I saw Bonnie had lowered her window. Ashley went to talk with her while I rolled the suitcase to the trunk, taking a bit of time so they could talk before I climbed inside the car. Once I was in, they chatted for a few more minutes. She seemed to be close to Ashley.

After their goodbyes, I drove to my place. When we arrived, I went straight into the underground garage.

"Wow. This is amazing. I noticed you've got a huge park next to you too."

While I parked the car, she turned to me abruptly. "I forgot to ask. Do you have two bedrooms?"

I fought laughter, but the corners of my mouth twitched, "I do, Bonnie. Even if I didn't, I'd take the couch." I leaned in. I couldn't help myself. “One bedroom or seven, it wouldn't make a difference.”

“Why?” she whispered.
