Basically.

The fire brewing in my veins disintegrates another smaller bit. Two pools of liquid blue stare down at me.

“Let me go,” I warn, not expecting him to listen. “I need to see Abram.”

“Abram? Why do you need to see him?”

After a brief silence, his mouth flattens to his teeth, eyes widening in annoyance.

“You’re not going to tell me, are you?” he says with a sigh, staring past me. He already knows the answer.

Gulping, I weigh my next set of words. I want to tell him, I do, it’s just… not my place to share. The hurt is visible on his face, but I don’t relent. I can’t, not yet.

“Is he in?”

“Should be,” he says but it’s clipped. Stressed?

With eyes carrying less excitement than before, he lets me step out. Only it isn’t the hurt that has me turning back but a wavering feeling instead.

What is it? I silently question him over my shoulder.

He shakes his head as his brows thunder, watching my retreating form. His jaw tightens even as he scratches it, the closer I come to the door and the farther I move from him.

“Fuck it,” I hear and then he’s right beside me again. “If you don’t want to tell me why, fine. But I’m going in there with you.”

“What? Why?” I splutter.

His lips smash more together, and my nerves skyrocket.

“Is there something you’re not telling me?”

He snorts, and it’s as arrogant as you’d expect it to be coming from Iceman. “I believe I asked you the same question.” He eyes me quizzingly.

“Mine isn’tmineto share.” Giving him something, even if it’s nothing.

Something flashes across his face then, but whatever it is he shakes it off. “Okay let’s pretend that’s helpful.” His voice is like a razor edge.

We’re almost to his office now. The door’s closed so I can’t see anything other than the misty fog of the glass. But the closer we get the more my nerves start to sizzle.

That inferno inside me flaring back up like a match to a box, and I have no idea why. My spine stiffens, ready for whatever.

Is this why Cole met me at the elevator? Had he been trying to stop me? My gut screams telling me I’m right. I hadn’t told him I’d be coming in today. Mostly because this visit wasn’t planned, so it’s got to be coincidental he spotted me.

That’s what I convince myself is the truth at least.

My heart beats rapidly, but my mind is set. Determined to face whatever’s on the other side.

Cole’s footsteps pound twice as loud as mine, but he’s right here. Beside me, as he agreed he would be. Instead of fighting, he chose to let me lead. The thought equally makes my head spin and my insides pound faster.

Flinging it open, the glass rattles, bouncing off the wall and Abram’s eyes fly my way, not expecting my intrusion.

The woman sitting in the chair across from his desk is slower to reciprocate. Her body coils like a snake as she shifts. Far less stunned and more bored.

Lorna.

What’s she doing here?

My teeth grit automatically. The small movement causes Cole’s posture to widen further. His breath slow but controlled. Even.
