“All right, then,” he says before he turns, rounds his desk, and seats himself in his desk chair.

What? That’s it? That’s all? He isn’t even going to argue with me? He’s not even going to try to convince me to stay?

Well, then. My face heats with a mixture of anger and embarrassment. Anger because I deserve more, dammit, and embarrassment because, apparently, Mr. Steele doesn’t agree that I deserve more.

I’m certain of one thing—I made the right decision.

Not only do I need to get away from my boss, I also need to get out of the rut of choosing the wrong guy.

Unavailable—check.

Emotionally distant—check.

Player—check.

Complete loser—double check.

If I don’t get away from RJ Conglomerates and Mr. Cameron Steele, I’ll still be here four years from now drooling over a boss who hardly notices I exist, much less that I have breasts or a vagina.

My biological clock is ticking so loud it’s nearly deafening.

My feet feel like bricks as I drag them to the door.

“Ms. Miller.”

I stop and take a deep breath. “Yes, sir?” I aim for an unaffected tone, but I’m not sure I pull it off. I force him to speak to my back. It’s impolite, but it’s the best I can do at the moment.

“I have a proposition for you.” He clears his throat, and I slowly glance at him over my shoulder. “One last assignment, and if you agree, I’ll throw in five months’ severance pay.”

Five months’ pay? That sways my resolve and piques my curiosity. I wait for him to explain.

He sucks in a big breath, then says, “I want you to be my fiancée.”

Silence.

More silence.

The room is still silent as I wait for a punchline.

It doesn’t come.

Slowly, I turn. My jaw hangs open, as I stare with a mixture of skepticism, suspicion, and astonishment.

“I…uh…I…huh?”

I’m not delusional. I know I’m more suited to the Craig Lawsons of the world. Cameron Steele dates women who are gorgeous, statuesque, and accomplished. I should know—I’m the one who sends them flowers, cards, and expensive gifts.

He holds up his palms. “Just for a few weeks.”

“A few weeks,” I parrot.

He briefly explains his dilemma as well as his plan, and it sounds like complete insanity to me.

Twilight zone bizarre.

He wants us to pretend to be engaged. He’ll parade me around in front of his family for the holidays as his fiancée. But if I do this, he’s agreed to throw in five months’ pay as an enticement.

That’s a big enticement.
