“If Grant wanted ye to meet him in your special spot, where would that be?”

Fiona’s whole face drains of blood. She sways in front of me like she’s about to faint. Christ. I grab her waist, hauling her up against me in case she collapses

“Fiona? Lass? Are ye all right? D’ye need a doctor?”

But Fiona has already regained some color and seems more steady on her feet as she pushes away from me. I let her step back but keep my hands on her waist to steady her.

“That’s what the note said?” she asks quietly, her voice wavering slightly. “That he wants me to go to our special spot?”

She forces the words “our special spot” through her teeth, sounding like she’s trying not to gag. I nod, her eyes lowering, fixing on my collarbone as she sighs.

“When we were younger, Grant would make me go with him to Franklin Park. Over near the Forest Hills Cemetery,” she whispers as I lean down to hear her. “There’s a pond there. He used to take me there and hold my head under the water until I was sure I would drown. But then, right before I passed out, he’d let me go.”

Jesus fuck, I’m going to enjoy killing the sick bastard slowly. I brush my lips over Fiona’s cold ones and hug her tightly.

“He’s never going to be able to touch ye again, leannán,” I promise. Fiona blows out a breath, nodding beneath my face, where it’s buried in her hair.

“I know. You’re going to keep me safe.”

I am if it’s the last thing on God’s green earth I ever do.

Chapter Twenty-Four

RONAN

After extracting a promise from Fiona and Shawna that they will deadbolt the door behind me, not opening it for anyone, I check with the doorman that no one matching Grant’s description has been seen lurking around

He assures me they haven’t and that the building has extra eyes on the security cameras out front and in the garages watching out for him, so I head to my SUV.

I put in the call, and we meet at Oracle, heading in two SUVs to Franklin Park.

It’s not hard to find the spot Fiona was talking about. As we creep through the undergrowth in the trees, surround the area, and move in, we hear children crying and Carmen begging Grant to let her kids go.

“P-please. You can k-kill me. Just let them go. Th-they have n-n-nothing to do with this.”

“Shut up, bitch,” Grant snaps back at her. The sound of flesh hitting flesh rings out, and Carmen whimpers as Grant backhands her across the face.

“P-please,” Carmen keeps trying. “If what we had ever meant anything to you….”

She falls silent when he hits her again, sneering at her. “You were a means to an end. You spread your legs and exposed yourself on the same stage Fi-Fi did. You’re both the same. Whores.”

My eyes scan the small clearing, ignoring Grant Clatham's nonsense about strippers doing the devil’s work or some such utter shite.

Carmen’s kids are huddled together a few yards away from Grant and their mother. They’re bawling their eyes out and hugging each other. Carmen is crouched on the ground near Grant’s legs, hunched over. But he starts to pace. This is our best opportunity, and Connor’s the best shot of the lot of us.

He’s standing beside Seamus, and I see Fitzy’s lips move as Connor raises his gun, waiting until Grant has paced away from Carmen. There’s a crack and a lot of screaming as Grant goes down, writhing on the ground.

Paddy and Niall are on him in seconds, while Liam kneels beside Carmen, who flings herself away from him and snatches at her screaming kids.

Connor goes to them while Seamus crosses to me. I watch, eyes narrowed, as Paddy and Niall plug the gut wound, hoisting a sweating, pale-faced, moaning Grant Clatham between them.

Seamus’s hand comes down to clamp on my shoulder. “You can get your hands on him at Oracle.”

I glare at him, but I can see the warning in his eye and nod sharply.

“You’ll ride with me, Carmen, and her kids,” Seamus continues. I grit my teeth but nod again. His tone makes it clear that I don’t have a choice.

Connor leaves with Niall and Paddy, dragging that piece of shite with them, while Liam helps Carmen stand, picking up one of her kids while she picks up the other.
