“I’m pretty sure Ronan would need to have an actual conversation with me before I became yourmom.” I snort at the idea, and Liam flashes me a look I can’t discern as we both climb into his SUV.

“Why don’t you try to talk tohim?”

Liam pulls out of the driveway, glancing at me as I blink at him in surprise. I open my mouth to respond with a snarky comment but close it and study Liam carefully with a sigh.

“I wouldn’t know the first thing to talk to him about.”

Liam nods like he expected me to say something like that.“Tell him something about yourself without him having to ask first. He’d like that.”

I nod thoughtfully while I watch Liam. I always kind of wrote him off as the young one of the crew, only there because he’s Ronan’s protégée. But sometimes I forget he’s been a part of Seamus Fitzpatrick’s crew for almost five years. I was inhigh schoolfive years ago.

“If I were your mom, you’d have to do what I told you to.”

Liam snorts, rolling his eyes. “You and every-fucking-one else.”

I bite back a snort of my own. “You don’t have to drive me home, you know.Idon’t ask you to.”

Liam throws me a look that asks if I’m an idiot.

“You shouldn’t live in Roxbury,” he grumbles. “There are plenty of good places in other parts of Boston.”

Ugh. Not him too. He’s spent too much time listening to Ronan bitch about my apartment building. I roll my eyes at him.

“I like where I live, thank you very much,” I tell him primly. He rolls his eyes right back at me.

RONAN

Liam slides into Seamus’s office, late as usual. Seamus raises his eyebrows at him, but Liam drops into the last available chair with a shrug.

“Fi was visiting Tiggy and Cillian. She was going to get the bus back to Roxbury, so I gave her a lift.”

“Why does the lass insist on living there?” Niall grumbles, turning to glare at me. “Mellie keeps trying to go and visit her at her shite apartment. Ye need to sort out the lass’s living arrangements.”

I stare moodily back at the prick. Aye, I do, but I don’t want to rush the lass. I can’t risk her pulling back, putting us right back to square one. That is somewhere I have absolutely zero desire to be, especially after she let me claim her mouth.

“Enough about Ronan’s little blonde stripper,” Seamus drawls, drawing the room's attention to him.

I bristle at his description. Fiona is more than a stripper. That’s why I’m trying to get her off that stage and behind the bar. The stubborn lass just won’task!

“Liam accidentally exposed some more weaknesses with our alliance with the Italians,” Seamus sighs and rubs his eyes tiredly. No doubt his wean is keeping him up at night.

Paddy shifts uncomfortably in his seat. We’re having problems with the Italians thanks to his wife’s dead brother and Paddy’s insistence on keeping the lass for himself instead of handing her over.

“We need to take care of it. Immediately. Sean wants it done tonight. Paddy, I want you, Connor, and me to take the waterfront. Ronan, Niall. You two and Liam will sort through the docks.”

I rise with a nod, nudging Liam. He springs to his feet, following Niall out of the room. I slide into the front seat of Liam’s SUV, with Niall climbing into the back. As we drive out of the staff parking lot, Niall locks eyes with one of the Vice cops parked in front of the club.

“D’ye have to stare-off with them every time ye pass?” I sigh.

“Aye, I do,” Niall grumbles back. I know he had an issue with the police and Mellie, but he doesn’t need to antagonize them. We don’t need the heat they could bring down on us all.

Liam is pensive as he drives Niall and me to the docks. Normally, the conversation between Niall and me about the Vice cops would have drawn a joke. I wonder what’s on the lad’s mind when he finally pipes up.

“Why don’t you justtalkto Fi?”

Both Niall and I blink at him in surprise.

“Talk to her?” I repeat while Niall snickers softly.
