“And it wouldn’t hurt to try,” Lex added.

“We’ve gone through a lot of trouble to coordinate glamoured fae going to your apartment to keep your actual whereabouts hidden. What if you get caught? You’d ruin your credibility with them, and that’s all we have.” I rested my forearms on my desk, leaning forward. “We can’t let that happen.”

“I know. But they trust me, so I should be able to have free rein inside.” She glanced at Lex, who nodded in reassurance. “And I made it into the palace without getting caught. At least at first. The Lunars have a bunch of security, but not nearly as much as you do.”

She had a point. So far, she hadn’t had many leads on the search. Time was running out. She’d proven her skills as a thief before, so it wasn’t as if she had no experience.

“Fine,” I said. “Let’s do it. But we’ll go with you.”

“No.” She shook her head. “It’s better if I go at it alone. They can’t know that anything is off.”

“Then we can be behind a cloaking spell,” I said. “Lex, Jagger—agreed?”

“Agreed,” Lex said. When Arden pulled an annoyed face, he added, “You might need backup.”

To my surprise, she didn’t fight him.

“Okay. Just as long as you’re cloaked.” She swallowed. “I’ve got this under control.”

“I hope you do,” I said, sitting back in my seat. “Because we won’t give you extra time.”

“Don’t ask her if she’s okay again,” I said to Flint before he opened his mouth. “For fuck’s sake, what’s changed between us being here and being two blocks away? Nothing. Unclench.”

His mouth pressed into a line, and he looked straight ahead as our driver took us toward the Forsaken Lunars headquarters. Arden shot me a thankful look. Flint was being an ass, pestering her about every last part of her plan and whether she was prepared. She was ready as she could be.

I believed her when she said she could get in. And I believed in her.

Flint was still agitated about the fact that Lex and I were sleeping with her when she was our prisoner, but I didn’t care. She was more than that to me. I hadn’t realized how routine life as a Royal had gotten until she rolled in. She was unlike any female I’d ever met—tenacious as fuck, gorgeous, and brave. If any female was going to make this work, it was her.

Plus, we were going in hidden by a cloaking spell. It wasn’t like we were throwing her in without backup.

We stopped a good distance from where the hidden headquarters were and got out of the van. Cloaking spells were usually something we could do without a second thought, but this situation required more care.

“Ready?” I asked Lex and Flint. “I can cloak us.”

“Ready,” Lex said.

I started a cloaking spell on the three of us, using much more power than I would have if we were on another mission. I never doubted my power or the stability of my spells, but Arden was worth the extra effort.

This spell allowed Flint, Lex, and me to see each other, but it hid us from view and evaded weaker fae’s security spells easily. The upside of it was that it essentially made us ghosts, but the bad news was that we couldn’t fight, at least with our physical forms. Even a few powerful fae working together weren’t able to make a spell as strong as one of ours.

“Okay.” Arden swallowed, tightening her ponytail and pushing up the sleeves of her oversized hoodie. “It’s a ten-minute walk from here. I have to call them to let them know I’m on my way.”

“We’re right behind you,” Lex said.

Arden pulled out her phone and dialed a number, walking down the block.

“Give her more space,” I told Flint. He was hovering over her shoulder. “You think something is going to happen on this street?”

Flint sighed and slowed down, falling into line alongside us.

“Hey, Tommy,” Arden said into the phone. “I’m almost to the HQ. Is someone there to let me in? Okay, see you soon.”

She hung up and tucked her phone into the pocket of her jeans, the same ones she’d been in the night we captured her. We assumed she wouldn’t want them anymore, but she’d pestered us until we gave her old clothes back.
