“Yeah. It sucked for him, since I won. He had to go to the ball like that, too.”

Both of us laughed.

“I can’t imagine Flint like that at all.” She sat down first, then I followed. “Has Flint been like this for a long time? Possessive?”

“Not always.” The reasons why were his story to tell, though. “But we were teenagers, so we were mostly being stupid. Our powers were getting stronger, and I’m pretty sure he just wanted to test the full extent of his abilities.”

“That sounds like being a teenager, for sure.” She rested her head on my shoulder.

“This is great,” Arden said, looking out toward the water. “And so quiet. Usually, when I’ve been to the beach with Lucy and her husband, it’s been a total madhouse.”

“It helps to have a private beach. It’s definitely peaceful,” I said, resting a hand on her upper back. “I’m going to take a swim. Want to come?”

“Yeah, it’s warm out here.”

I peeled off my t-shirt, and she took off her swimsuit cover-up. To my relief, she’d chosen a one-piece. It still showed off her ass, her slender curves, and a little cleavage, so I wasn’t immune to checking her out. But if she had worn a bikini, this afternoon would have been a battle between my cock and my brain.

Arden tossed her cover-up onto her chair and ran into the water. I followed, diving in face first when it was deep enough. The water was cool and calm. I resurfaced, treading water and looking for Arden.

“This is perfect,” she said, swimming toward me. “I’m glad it’s not too cold.”

“It’s a good time of year for this.” I floated on my back, and she did the same. The current made our bodies bob toward each other, our arms brushing.

That stupid spell was going to be the death of me. My primal instincts were begging me to claim her, but even if I couldn’t fuck her, this was exactly where I wanted to be. She had my heart.

I stopped floating, righting myself to look at her. She was staring up at the sky.

“What’s going on up here?” I asked, touching her forehead.

“Oh, just…worries.” She stopped floating as well. “About Tommy. About the Forsaken Lunars. About my shifter form. And definitely about my parents.”

I pulled her into my arms. “Then we can use this time to forget about it, at least for a while.”

She smiled, though it wasn’t as bright as I’d seen it. “Okay.”

“C’mon, let’s go back to the shore. We can get some sun and talk more.”

We swam around for a few more minutes. When we were back on land, we toweled off and sat in our chairs. I dug into the bag with our snacks and offered her some berries.

“Thanks.” She took a few and popped them into her mouth.

“I should have asked you what your favorite comfort food is so the aide could pack it,” I said. “To help you forget.”

Her smile finally warmed her whole face. “I don’t think macaroni and cheese on the beach really works.”

I laughed. “Depends on the beach.”

“I haven’t been to many. This is only my second one,” she said, taking another berry. “I haven’t really been out of Rouhaven, honestly. I want to go someday. Explore other fae cities. But I’m stuck here for a while.”

“As soon as we take down the Forsaken Lunars, I can take you anywhere you want.”

“Really?”

“Of course. We rule over all the fae settlements and cities, so we can go anywhere we’d like.” I stretched my legs out in front of me. “I want you to have everything you could possibly need.”

She raised an eyebrow. “Even though I can get it for myself?”

“Yep. You’ll have two of everything.” I grinned, and she cracked a smile, too.
