He grabbed them from a leather catchall and handed them to me. “Thanks. I’ll text you later when I know more.”

“I’m coming with you.”

“Not unless you want me to take you to the doctor as well.” I met his eyes to make sure he was listening. When he grunted, I asked, “Are you okay to stay here with Maddox? He’s still asleep.”

“I’m fine,” he huffed, moving to stand again. “I’ll help you with Rex.”

I narrowed my eyes at him. “Tristan. Don’t make me tie you to the bed.”

As I left the room, I could’ve sworn I heard him mutter, “Princess, it’d be the other way around.”

I swallowed hard and shook my head to clear it.Off-limits.

Lust was coursing through my body as I rushed down the stairs. But as soon as I found Savannah clinging to Rex, all thoughts of Tristan and his cock and what had just happened fled my mind. Barf was the furthest thing from sexy.

“Okay.” I assessed the situation. “You grab the towels. I’ll get Rex.”

She nodded.

“Hey, Rexy,” I said, searching for some fur that wasn’t covered in vomit. Oh god. This was disgusting. But I felt so bad for him that I finally caved and smoothed my hand over his head. “We’re going to get you feeling better. Do you think you can come with me?”

If a dog could moan, I was pretty sure Rex just had. He let out a long howl unlike any I’d heard from him before.

Okay. Well, shit.I let out a sigh. “I guess I’m going to have to carry you.”

I squeezed my eyes shut briefly. I had no idea how I was going to do this, but whatever happened, I planned to block out as many memories of this ordeal as possible. Well, the memories that didn’t involve Tristan anyway.

When we finally got to the animal hospital, I rushed inside and explained the situation. One of the employees followed me back out to the car. But as I was helping unload Rex, he barfed all over me.

Oh god. I could feel the bile rising in my throat, my stomach revolting.

Think of something,anything, else.

“Ellie?” Savannah asked. “You okay?”

I held a hand to my mouth, trying to ignore the stench and the warm, wet feel of my clothes. “Yep. Yeah.” I nodded, following them inside.

Rex was rushed down the hall, and a woman at the front desk offered me a clean pair of scrubs. She led us to an exam room where I stripped out of my clothes and threw them in the trash. As soon as they were in the bin, I shuddered.

Savannah sat in a chair and studied me while I washed my hands, my arms. I wondered what she was thinking, at least until she said, “Your body looks different than Mommy’s.”

“Yeah?” I asked, using some wet paper towels to clean my chest and dab at my bralette before pulling on the shirt.

“Yeah. Her boobs were smaller. And she had these weird lines on her stomach. Grannie has really big boobs,” she said, referring to Tristan’s mom. “But they hang down low.” I tried not to laugh. I knew she was merely making innocent observations.

“Isn’t that cool?” I asked, tugging on the pants.

She tilted her head to the side. “What?”

“Well, I think it’s really neat that bodies—like families—come in all shapes and sizes. And all bodies are good bodies.”

From her quizzical expression, I knew she was processing my words. “Like River.”

“What about River?”

“Well, his family has a mom, a dad, and a baby on the way. But Bennett wasn’t always his dad.”

I nodded. “That’s right.”
