Page 36 of A Love Like That

I angled my head against the tiles and closed my eyes. How had I so completely misread the situation?

Well, not entirely. I may have misunderstood her reasons for coming to my room, but I couldn’t forget the desire in her eyes. The way her nipples hardened to tight peaks beneath her shirt.

My cock throbbed in my hand, and I gave it a tug. Nope. Stop. Donotgo there.

She’s Tessa’s sister.

Tessa had been my first kiss. My first love. My first everything. And I’d always assumed she’d be my last.

But as Enzo liked to remind me “Non tutte le ciambelle riescono col bucco,” which roughly translated to “not all donuts have a hole.” Or life didn’t always work out the way you planned.

I sure as hell hadn’t planned on this when I’d asked Ellie to stay with us.

I switched the faucet to cold, standing beneath the spray as if it could cool these unspeakable thoughts. As if it would extinguish this inferno raging inside me. Finally, I gave up and switched off the water completely before stepping out of the shower.

Nothing happened.

I straightened, but I couldn’t meet my eyes in the mirror. I kept telling myself nothing had happened, but I knew that was a lie. Worse still, I’d wanted it to.

The way I’d spoken to her…

Commanding. Possessive.

And the way she’d responded…her lips parting. Thighs squeezed together…I shook my head and got dressed.

Before going downstairs, I removed my wedding ring, feeling the weight of it as I spun it around in my fingers. I stared at the engraving of “Always and Forever” on the inside with the date of our wedding, and I sighed before placing it inside my dresser drawer. Without it, I felt both naked and surprisingly free. It was an odd sensation, and one I didn’t wish to dwell on.

The smell of bacon and the sound of laughter lured me to the kitchen, where Ellie and the kids sang and danced around the island. Ellie was just as enthusiastic as the kids, belting out the lyrics with a smile as she held a wooden spoon to her lips.

I couldn’t help but watch her. Be captivated by her. The way her purple hair swirled around her. The sway of her hips and the jostling of her breasts. It was fucking hot.

“Daddy!” Savannah called, waving me over.

I jerked my attention away from Ellie.

“Good morning,” I said, pulling my daughter in for a hug. “I hear you had quite the adventure last night.” I peered down at her. “Sneaking out of the house with Ellie.” I shook my head and tsked, trying to keep it light. I turned my attention to Ellie. “You’re a bad influence.”

Ellie smirked, but the dark circles beneath her eyes spoke of a sleepless night filled with worry. I tried to read her expression for clues. Was she upset about what had happened between us? Did she feel uncomfortable around me? Did she want it to happen again?

Savannah laughed and rolled her eyes. “Yeah, Dad.Suchan adventure. Rex threw up on Ellie.”

I cringed and glanced at her. “Is that true?”

“Yep.” Ellie crossed her arms over her chest, and I tried not to stare at her tits.

“And…” Savannah giggled. “And— Oh my gosh.” She was laughing so hard she had to stop to catch her breath. “You should’ve seen Ellie try to carry Rex to the car.”

“Try?” Ellie placed her hands on her hips. “I did nottry. I did it. And that dog better love me forever. He’s heavy.”

Maddox started laughing as Savannah tried to reenact the scene, and then we all joined in.

Savannah was really sensitive, especially toward animals. The fact that she could already joke about the whole ordeal was a big relief. I had a feeling that was all thanks to Ellie.

After they finally stopped laughing, I gave them the update on Rex. Ellie sagged against the counter, quickly straightening when Savannah glanced her way. She had to be exhausted after last night. They probably both were. I couldn’t imagine how frightened Savannah must have been, yet she seemed remarkably unfazed.

I gripped Savannah’s shoulder. “I’m proud of you, kiddo. You were very brave—speaking up and getting help for Rex.”

“Thanks, Dad.”
