He nodded, clearly pleased. And that did something to me. The idea that I’d pleased him by being nice to myself.

He cleared his throat and dropped his hand. But it was too late. My body was already pumping with desire.

“Right. Um. Where were we?” I asked, putting some distance between us. “How much are you wanting to cut?”

He leaned his hip against the counter. “I’m open to suggestions.”

I wasn’t opposed to the longer hair. It was actually kind of hot. But I got the impression this was about more than a haircut. He hadn’t cut it since before Tessa’s death. The hair was symbolic of his grief. And if he truly wanted a new beginning—and a confidence boost to woo those investors—he needed to feel more like his old self.

“I assume you have scissors and a trimmer?” I asked.

He nodded.

“IfI’m going to cut your hair,” I said. “Can I also give you a facial?”

He threw his hands in the air. “Why not?”

“Okay. You’ve got yourself a deal.” I headed for the stairs, needing to grab some supplies. “But first, I need to watch a few tutorials.”

“Well that’s…confidence-inspiring.”

I laughed. “If it turns out badly, don’t say I didn’t warn you.”

“Fair enough. I’ll take Rex for a walk, and then we can meet back here when you’re ready.”

“You mean Houdini,” I said, petting Rex when he wandered over to us.

Tristan chuckled and grabbed the leash. “Bennett warned me about huskies, but I was not prepared.”

I nodded, thinking of Rex’s latest escape attempt. We’d gotten a call from one of the neighbors after she’d seen Rex’s head poking out from beneath the fence, tongue lolling. The picture she’d sent Tristan would’ve been funny if I weren’t so concerned with how close Rex had been to getting out.

I went upstairs and watched a few videos, hoping it wouldn’t be too difficult. I took beauty risks all the time—on myself. My friends. But Tristan? Tristan was different.

I texted Piper about Tristan’s request, and she immediately responded.

Piper: He must really trust you.

Not helping! I’m freaking out here. What if it looks terrible?

Piper: Even if it does, he can always pay someone to fix it.

Yeah, but…it feels like more than just a haircut.

She didn’t know about what had happened the night of Rex’s surgery. I was determined to forget about it and move on, and talking about it wouldn’t change anything.

Piper: How so?

I debated before typing and sending my next message.

My sister used to cut it for him.

Three dots danced on the screen. Appearing and disappearing. I paced, anxiously awaiting her response.

Piper: Interesting.

“Interesting?Interesting?”I huffed. What the heck was I supposed to do now?

Piper: Do you want to cut his hair?
