“I should have been there more for you when you were having problems, but I figured you had them under control.”

“I did. Or we did. We just weren’t on the same page at the same time often. We would have gotten there.”

“You probably would have,” she said. “But now you’ve got someone else to think those things about. Or aren’t you there yet? And you can tell me to mind my own business if you want to.”

“I won’t do that. We are in this together for the most part.”

“It’s good to hear that.”

“I’ve got real strong feelings for Jasmine, but I’m not sure we are at a point to say them yet.”

He felt like he started to last night and she all but glossed over his love comment.

Of course it’s not like he said he loved her but loved something about her. He probably could have handled that all a little better, but with the way his night went, he just wanted to forget everything and take Jasmine home and to bed.

“You’ll get there when you’re ready,” she said. “You’ll know the right time.”

“I suppose you’re right. She was good about the whole night. She did feel sorry for me.”

“Then your night ended well,” she said, laughing.

He’d started this with his mother the other day so he had to just grin when she threw it back at him. “Well enough.”

“The good news is that she knows you get all your good traits from me,” she said, patting his hand.

“I think she knew that all along,” he said.

“You didn’t tell me if you gave your father the money. Again, you can tell me to mind my own business.”

“Do you think I did?” he asked.

“No,” she said.

“I’m not going to. Noah and Michele were given a lot growing up. I’m sure it was Dad trying to prove that he could do that with other kids. The things you did for me.”

“I’m positive that is part of it. That is on him though for doing it. Or trying to.”

“My thoughts exactly,” he said. “There was part of me that thought of reaching out to Noah and Michele and seeing if they needed anything, but I got thinking that they are probably clueless as to what was going on.”

“Do you think that?”

“Those kids act entitled. I don’t see them getting jobs and working. Brenda loves being a housewife. I’m sure she is aware of the financial situation. I could see it on her face. She’d even said at one point they’d figure it out.”

“Don’t let Brenda’s sweetness fool you. She knew your father was married. He claims she came onto him. I have no idea and it doesn’t matter. They are both at fault. They were caught. I think they were caught because Brenda wanted him to herself and had him doing things that I’d find out about.”

He never thought of his stepmother that way before. But he also didn’t know his father cheated on his mother with Brenda.

“Then maybe she is smarter than I give her credit for. She got what she wanted in life too. She had a job before and could get one now with the kids in college to help pay for it. A part-time job would still get her home to have dinner on the table for Dad.”

“Whatever floats their boat,” Mona said. “Like I’m sure he was looking at all the boats in the water and seeing dollar signs in his head. You know this isn’t the end of it, right?”

“I know,” he said. “He’ll try again. He won’t do it with college costs though. That is the third time he brought it up and I told him not to even consider it again. When I have kids someday, they will be my responsibility. I won’t expect their grandparents, siblings, or aunts—no other family—to take care of them.”

“You get that from me,” his mother said. “Had life not dealt you the hand that it had, you still would have been the same way and you know it.”

“I do.”

“Do you see yourself having those kids still?”
