“I couldn’t live like that,” Jasmine said. “I just need too much nature around me.”

“You always did,” Dahlia said. “Maybe that is why you seem the happiest of the three of us. It’s like you got what you needed in life.”

She’d never thought of it that way. Nor did she realize that her older sister wasn’t happy. “What’s going on with you, Dahlia?”

“Nothing, why?”

“That comment made it sound like you aren’t happy,” Ivy said. “You haven’t said anything.”

“I’m not unhappy,” Dahlia said, shrugging. “I guess I’m just content. But I’ve been that way most of my life too.”

“You have,” she said. “It’s time you change that.”

“Maybe,” Dahlia said. “Tell us more about your boyfriend. Or at least entertain us for the rest of the trip.”

“I can do that,” she said. “We are going at a nice slow pace, but sometimes I think he wants to go faster.”

“Do you?” Ivy asked.

“You know, I think sometimes I do too. But he’s got a lot more to overcome than me. I like the pace we’ve got.”

“It seems to me if he’s moving faster, then he’s overcome more than you realize,” Dahlia said. “I think it’s more that you have to always call the shots more than anything.”

She laughed. “You’re probably right. We’ll figure it out. We’ve done a good job of it so far.”

At least she thought so.

Deep Feelings

“You’re here late.”

Wesley was sitting at the bar in his mother’s restaurant. It was seven and normally he was home or getting ready to go home. Not sitting at the bar ordering dinner.

“Thought I’d get some food and see how things were going here. The last busy weekend for the most part.”

“I’ve been told no. This whole month will probably be busy. The area is beautiful in the fall and people are itching to get the last of their time in before winter hits,” his mother said. “I’m not looking forward to that.”

“We decided to come here. It will be fine. We own the place and can come and go when we want.”

“That’s true for you,” his mother said. “But I still have to be here to open.”

“No,” he said. “You’ve got staff for that. And the restaurant normally has shorter hours in the winter.”

“I want to play that by ear,” she said. “Yes, I don’t think I’ve got a problem closing on Monday and maybe even Tuesday, but we’ll see. I still want a lunch and dinner crowd though.”

“We’ll figure it out,” he said. “If it costs more to have it open and the waitstaff and cooks aren’t doing much, it doesn’t make sense.”

“Ah, but here is where I’ve got an idea.”

“Are you going to tell me?” he asked.

He was sipping a beer while he waited for his dinner. The place was fairly busy so he was shocked his mother was willing to sit down and talk to him when she was normally walking around.

“I can pass it off to you right now. I want to do takeout. Not just dishes where people can come and pick up but actual meals. Like family meals. Those that are busy working parents can come and get dinner for the family and not cook during the week. It’s better than fast food. We’d have specials that would be easier for those things.”

“Sounds interesting,” he said. “Going to do delivery too?”
