“A package? What are you talking about? Who sent you a package? Why can’t it be delivered to your house? This doesn’t make any—Oh,” she gasps. “Oh, right. Yourpackage.”

Rayne sags in obvious relief. “Yes.”

“Right. Of course I can pick it up for you. I completely forgot you had a delivery.” Natalia chuckles at that, laughing at some inside joke I clearly don’t understand. “I assume since you’re calling from Kirill’s phone, he’s fine with me taking off early today.”

Rayne glances up at me. “He’s fine with it,” she says without asking. “Thanks again, Nat.”

“Anything for my baby girl,” Natalia says. Then she laughs again. “Take as long as you need. Your package is in my capable hands now.”

Rayne rolls her eyes. “Thanks, Nat.”

When they end the call, Rayne slides her leg up and around my hip and jumps down off the counter. Feet firmly on the floor, she holds my phone out to me. “Thanks for that.”

“A package, huh?”

“It’s an important package. Expensive.” She turns to the mirror to assess her appearance, but I can tell she’s trying to avoid the question.

“I could have taken you to pick it up.”

She pulls a twig out of her hair and runs her fingers through the strands. It’s shorter than it used to be. The cut lands against the tops of her shoulder blades rather than halfway down her back. It makes her look older, more mature.

“You’ve done enough.”

“That almost sounds like a bad thing.”

“I just mean… I don’t want to inconvenience you anymore,” she says. “You saved me from Steven and then from falling off a cliff. I think I can handle picking up a package on my own.”

“With your track record, I wouldn’t be so sure.”

She checks her bandage and then bends down to swipe dirt and debris off the bottoms of her jeans. It’s distracting.

Rayne has filled out in all the best ways. Her hips are wider, making her body even more soft and inviting. I want to fit against her ass like a puzzle piece.

“Don’t have to rush off. Stay. Have a drink with me.”

Rayne stands tall and catches my eyes in the reflection of the mirror. I know she sees through the flimsy invitation to the truth beneath.

I want her.

“I can’t. I have to catch a bus and go get my car.”

“I’ll drive you.”

“No!” she snaps. She swallows, forcing herself to slow down. “I have to get back soon, anyway.”

“To your package.”

“To my—Yeah. And other things.”

I shift around her, leaning against the wall in front of the bathroom door. “On the phone, Natalia was worried that she could have said ‘something bad,’ ‘something off limits.’ What does that mean?”

Rayne lets out a quick, high-pitched laugh. “Who knows with Natalia? She was probably just worried about saying something that could get her fired.”

“Considering the conversation she and I had this morning, I doubt that was her concern.”

“What conversation?” Rayne goes pale. It’s like someone turned the saturation down on her skin. One second, she’s pink and flushed; the next, she’s white as snow. “What did she say?”

“I’m much more interested in what youthinkshe said.” I narrow my eyes. “You’re scared she told me something.”
