“Hello, Ms. Callie, I have your breakfast.” A beautiful native woman named Edena enters the room. She has been the only outside person I’ve seen other than Benedict and Rusty. She’s sweet and always sneaking me things. I tried to talk her into helping me escape, but she said she couldn’t do anything.

She sets the tray down and lifts the lid. The smell of the eggs has my stomach crawling up my throat. I roll out the other side of the bed and head for the restroom, where I dry heave until I feel faint.

“Ms. Callie, I know what’s the matter with you.” The look of concern on her face has me shaking my head no in denial. I won’t confirm it to them because I don’t want them to hurt my baby or me. “I’ll tell Master Benedict you are suffering from female problems. You get some rest. I won’t tell them,” she whispers to me and then helps me back to the bed. I curl up in a ball and my eyes are closed before she’s out of the room.

When I wake up next, I see a cup of tea on the side table and a sleeve of saltine crackers. The tea is still warm, so I know she brought it in recently. But it’s what’s under the napkin that causes me to look around. Is this a test?

A steak knife.

It’s not much, but it’s more than I had before. I carefully take it and hide it under my pillow. There is a loud bang on the door, and I tell them to enter.

Rusty steps through the door. “Stopping milking it ’cause it’s your period. Here’s some pads and some Midol. Get ready for dinner.” He throws a bag at me, and I open it to see exactly what he said it was.

“Okay.” I don’t argue so I don’t bring any more attention to myself.

I dress in one of the many sun dresses they have for me, then I wait for Rusty to come get me. When they first kidnapped me, I thought Benedict would rape me or make me dance for him. He would come into the club and watch me. He always gave me the creeps and made me uncomfortable.

I want to pocket the knife, but I don’t. I don’t want to get Edena in trouble. She never forgets to grab my utensils, so she did this on purpose. She knows, just like I do, if they find out I’m pregnant, then I’m in graver danger.

Like clockwork, Rusty comes back and directs me down to the large, screened porch facing the ocean. The house is a single level, but it’s huge. I do like I do every time, I look around and try to add more details to the floor plan I’m building in my mind. I was blindfolded when they brought me in, so I don’t know much about this place or what’s around me.

“Hello, Callie.” Benedict’s deep voice draws my attention to him. He’s about five foot ten with a large, toned body. He’s almost sixty with dark salt-and-pepper hair. He’s dressed as he always is in a three-piece suit. I haven’t seen him in anything else. No matter how humid or warm it is. He’s mostly been nice to me. He lets Rusty be the bad guy and threaten to hurt me.

I’ve heard Sir’s voice a couple of times, but I’ve never seen him. He won’t video chat but will call and talk to me over speakerphone. I know that if I ever heard him somewhere else, I would recognize his voice. I take my seat and wait for the meal to be served.

During the meal, Benedict asks me questions about home. I don’t answer him completely. I don’t want to put my family in danger.

“What did you go to college for?” he asks as he cuts a piece of steak from his plate and takes a bite. I’m not hungry for steak, but I scoop up a bite of rice.

“I originally studied early education. But when I dropped out, I decided I didn’t want to do that.”

“Is that why you dropped out?”

“No. My fiancé at that time cheated on me and I got depressed, which caused me to fall behind in my classes. I couldn’t recover, so I just quit.” I don’t tell him more than that.

Rusty scoffs from behind me, and I turn toward him. “It’s not funny. If you want to give me advice on how I should’ve handled it, tell me what your experience in this is.”

“Little girl, you’re just weak.” He laughs.

“Enough, Rusty,” Benedict orders him.

Declan

Iwatch from my spot on the perimeter of the property. It’s been too long. We got to Kauai right after they left. Just missing them. In that time, not only have I struggled to find her, but I’ve been dealing with having my cover blown. It’s not just mine. Something is going on with S.I. It appears they have a mole. I haven’t talked to Maya, but I’ve started distancing myself. My email is also blowing up with messages from Taliah, but I don’t want to respond to her until I know for sure that I have a clean line. I need to keep my friend safe, but I need to keep our joint case safer.

Once this plan starts, I’ll be taking Callie and Carter away from these islands and somewhere I feel I can protect them better. Brielle wouldn’t leave Honolulu, but I have an eye on her, just in case.

The plan is for Carter to come in from the ocean side of the property. Doing a SEAL entry. I’m coming in from the land side, and I’m currently on the side of the house in the brush. I’ve been here since early this morning. I’ve watched the security and know their routines. As the darkness envelopes the area more, I watch as Callie is led by the asshole we’ve learned is named Rusty. When we were able to talk to S.I., we found out he’s an associate of Sir’s. He used to work directly for him but has since been demoted to guard second tier leaders in the organization.

Moving through the darkness, I get closer to the house. I see the dark form of Carter making his way toward the house also. We are set to go in about thirty minutes. I watch a light come on in the room I know they are keeping Callie in. I move to the main power box and cut the power. It will cause chaos in the house, but it will also give us a chance to get Callie and get out. I’ve got a friend to help us with extraction. I hear voices rising and make my way across the lanai to the first guard. He’s standing at his post when I sneak up on him and slice his throat. I slowly lay his body down and move to my next objective. The team inside is on high alert, but their leader, Rusty, is nowhere to be found. The guards are just keeping to their posts. Rusty should have given them the order to rotate to a different pattern.

When I finally get to Callie’s room, I realize why I haven’t seen Rusty and why his team hasn’t either. I enter the room to find Callie straddling his body and plunging a knife into his neck. She’s yelling, but her words don’t make sense.

“You can’t have my baby.”

I move up behind her, and when her arm comes up, I shackle her wrist.
