“Why should I? You’ve already deemed me lacking and beneath you.” I know the words are cold, but I can’t stop the thought. My family has never given me the benefit of the doubt. I fold my arms tight against my chest as I try to hold myself together.
“You are perfect just the way you are. I was wrong.”
“What happened to Piper?”
“We don’t know. Her car was found with huge puddles of blood, but Duchess says she’s alive. She’s somewhere healing.”
“I had no hand in what happened to her. Yes, she ran. But it was Luca’s words not me that did it. I was only friends with Luca. I liked Piper.” I defend myself, pulling the blanket closer to me as I feel a chill, but it’s internally not from the air.
“I made a huge mistake. I should have listened to you. I should have asked what happened with Kyle instead of assuming.” Carter moves to stand next to my chair. I look up at him, and he grabs a chair to sit next to me. “I’ll never be able to make up for what I did, but believe me when I say I’ll be decking that asshole next time I see him. I also told the family everything.”
“It doesn’t change anything.” I try to hold in the sigh with a big breath, but it turns into a yawn.
“That’s the cue it’s nap time.” Declan appears and lifts me up. He’s completely devoted and attentive. He tells me numerous times a day he loves me and that he’ll protect me.
Today Carter had a brief meeting with Maya and found out there is a mole in the Securities International team. He’s only to contact her or Joshua. He’s also been assigned to me until they figure everything out. Declan said he could put him to work.
I reach up and brush my hand against Declan’s stubble as he lays me in the bed.
“You should forgive him.” It’s a suggestion, not an order.
“I will. I’m going to let him stew for a couple more days.” I roll to my side and Declan climbs into bed with me. His big body spoons mine, his hand resting on my blossoming bump.
“I love you, Callie Reynolds.”
“I love you more, Declan Reynolds.”
“Someday they will find Piper and she will tell everyone why she left. If you want to go back to Scotland, we can.”
“Home is wherever you are, Declan. I want to be with you always.” I tip my head back and he kisses me. I’ve given him my complete submission and he never takes it for granted. He loves me.
He’s right though, someday everyone will get Piper’s story. When that happens, maybe I’ll want to finally tell them mine too.
