“Okay, what do you got for me? I’m not coming out west. I knowBabushkawants me to, but I’m not. I can send some of my guys.”
“No, my case is there on the East Coast. Her name is Erika Arnold. She lives in Eastport, Rhode Island. I need a full detail on her with protection at a distance. Where she doesn’t know.”
The clicking of keys comes across the line and then a muttered curse.
“No can do.” She doesn’t say more, and I wait. My sister can’t lie to me, but there’s a lot she holds in. She will give up soon, she can’t help herself.
When she doesn’t, I realize I might be screwed.
“Come on, Ley. It’s an easy follow and trace. She could be in danger because she’s my wife.”
“Your what?” Ley taps away on her keys and then releases another muttered curse but a bit louder. “Fuck me.”
“No, thank you.” I try to get her to chuckle, but she doesn’t.
“Look, Gray, I can’t. But I can tell you she has a full detail already. And that’s too much for me to say. I have NDAs for a reason.”
“Who hired her a full detail?” Jealousy hits me hard. “I want his name and how long she’s had this detail.”
“I can’t give you that. But don’t be jealous, he’s already married.”
“That doesn’t make it better,” I growl into the line. “Ley, I’m serious. She’s my wife, and some crazy shit has been going down here. I need her protected.”
“What’s going on?”
“I don’t know, but someone has tried hacking the system several times. We’ve had breaches in security and had to toss a couple of guys for counting cards. Andrei is looking into the runners that have been caught on the premises too.”
“Fuck. Okay. I’ll personally make sure she’s protected a bit more, but I can’t tell you anything else.”
“I’m sending Riggs to you. You are closer to her, and he’s moping around without her.”
“She met Riggs?”
“Yeah. He took to her like I’ve never seen before.”
“Why is your wife here and you’re there? You need to decide what you want. From what I know, she has a very ingrained life here. She’s a part of the city.”
“I’m going to. Father, Andrei, and I talked. Nothing has been finalized, but I’m going to either bring her back here or something.”
“You know, plenty of casino owners don’t run the day-to-day and they aren’t a part of themob.” She’s bitter about me having any relationship with our father.
“I’m not. I hire the men who want out. I’m clean. There is nothing the bratva can do with my hotel without me knowing. I have a clean business.”
“Yet you have to talk to him and Andrei. What doesBabushkathink of your wife?”
“She didn’t call you and tell you?”
“No, did she need to?”
“She and Erika met before I could introduce them.Babushkaassumed the worst of her and proceeded to tell her everything that I hadn’t.”
“You lied to her?”
“I omitted the truth, that’s all. I was afraid she’d run. Looks like I was right.” I slam my hand onto my desk.
“Calm down, big guy. I’ll help you with what I can. Murtaugh will love to have Riggs here.”
“Where are you again?” She keeps moving around, keeping her business mobile instead of in one location.
