Her eyes widen. “Are you saying…” She stops, as if she can’t bear to say it in case the magic disappears.

“That I’m in love with you? I think so. I haven’t been in love before. But if I were, I think it would feel like this.”

She gives me a beautiful smile that warms me right through. “I think I’m in love with you too,” she whispers.

I reach out and tuck a strand of hair behind her ear. Then I grab her and roll onto my back, bringing her with me. She squeals and laughs, and then we exchange a long, lingering kiss.

“We’re going to have so much sex,” she says. “Maybe you should start eating steak to build up your stamina.”

I slide my hands up from her butt to her ribs, then underneath her to cup her breasts. “My dick’s going to be an inch shorter if you keep up like this.”

She giggles, then kisses me again, long and lazy, the sun lying across us like a warm yellow blanket.

On the bedside table, my phone buzzes.

She lifts her head, sighs, and reaches over to get it, glancing at the screen as she gives it to me. “Talk of the devil,” she says, lifting off me.

I look at the screen—it says Felicity. I frown. She hasn’t phoned me for a long time.

“Want me to go out?” Sidnie asks.

“No, of course not.” I answer the call and put it on speakerphone as I sit back against the pillows. “Hello?”

“Mack? It’s Felicity.”

“Hey. You’re on speakerphone, by the way, and Sidnie’s in the room.”

“That’s okay,” she says, “I’m glad she’s there. I wanted to apologize to you both for what happened on the court today.”

Sidnie and I exchange a look of surprise. “Okay,” I say. “But you didn’t actually do anything. It’s David who should apologize.”

“I think we both know that’s not going to happen. He’s an arsehole, Mack. I… broke up with him.” She clears her throat.

“Oh, I’m sorry,” Sidnie calls out. I send her an amused look. She shrugs and lifts up a palm as if to say,I felt like I had to sympathize.

“It was awful what he said about Victoria,” Felicity continues. “I know what she means to you, and I’m so sorry. And for his behavior when we lost. I was so embarrassed.”

“Don’t worry about it,” I say softly.

“All right. Well, I just wanted to say sorry. And Happy New Year.”

“Happy New Year to you, too.”

“And I hope you win the award, Mack. You deserve it.”

I go still. Sidnie’s eyebrows rise.

“Who the fuck told you about that?” I snap.

“Ah… shit. Never mind. Forget I said anything.”

“Felicity—”

She hangs up.

I glare at the phone, then toss it onto the bed.

“What award?” Sidnie asks.
