“Ouch,” I say, wincing.

Elizabeth groans. “That’s fucking done it.”

She’s right. Mack gives the guy a sound left hook that meets David’s nose with a loud crack, and blood sprays over them both.

“Owwww!” David doubles over, holding his hands to his face, while blood trickles through his fingers. “You’ve broken my fucking dose!”

Titus puts an arm around Mack, hauling him back. He pushes him away, but doesn’t attempt to hit him again. His expression is exultant though—he enjoyed doing that.

Elizabeth pushes through the crowd and marches up to David. “That’s the least of your problems,” she announces. “I trusted you. I took you on even though others—including Mack—warned me against you. And you reward me by doing this?” Even in her heels, she’s much shorter than all the guys around her, but with her flashing eyes and firm voice, she’s an imposing figure despite that. “You’re fired,” she snaps. “And don’t think you’ll be getting a reference, either.”

“And you’re banned from the club, too,” Huxley states. “It’s been an expensive evening for you, dude. Go on. Fuck off out of here.”

One of David’s friends pulls his shirt. “Come on. Let’s go.”

Someone stuffs some kitchen towel into his hands. He holds it to his nose, lets himself be led into the elevator, and the doors close.

There’s a collective exhalation amongst the crowd, and then everyone starts talking at once.

Ignoring them, I slip through the crowd up to Mack and stare at his blood-spattered shirt. “Wow.”

He accepts some kitchen towel from the receptionist and wipes his hand. “Hello,” he says to me.

“Well, aren’t you the knight in shining… dress shirt?”

“Nobody speaks about my girl like that,” he states.

“The man’s a weasel,” Huxley says. “He deserved everything he got.”

“Besides,” I add, “I didn’t drop my knickers immediately. It took me twenty-four whole hours.”

That breaks the tension, and everyone laughs.

“Jesus,” Victoria says to Mack, “look at the state of you.”

He looks down at his shirt. “Oh. Yeah.”

“I think maybe I should take you home,” I tell him. “Clean you up a bit.”

“Good idea,” Huxley says. “Although it’d be good to see the New Year in with you both.”

“We’ll come back,” Mack replies, taking my hand and leading me toward the elevator. He stops there and hesitates, looking back. “Sorry.”

“The fucker got what was coming to him,” Elizabeth states. “Fuck him.”

He nods, we walk into the carriage, he presses the button for the ground floor, and the doors close.

I look up at him as the carriage descends. He’s buzzing again. I’m sure he could run the whole of Auckland on his energy. Jesus. I’m absolutely crazy about this guy.

He blows on his knuckles, glances down at me, and raises an eyebrow. “Seriously?” he says. “After all your orgasms this afternoon, you’re still thinking about sex?”

I just give him a helpless look. What’s a girl to do?

Chapter Twenty-Five

Mack

Luckily, David’s gone by the time we leave the building. I text Jamie, and then Sidnie takes the kitchen towel and attempts to clean my hand while we wait for him to turn up.
