“Champagne,” Elizabeth and Victoria say together, and laugh.

I grin. “Champagne sounds good.”

He nods. “Are you all ready to order?”

I haven’t had a chance to look at the menu, but I know I want his famous Carbonara that has enough garlic and pepper in it to make your head explode. We give our orders, and he notes them all down.

“Thank you,” he says. He smiles at me. “And may I say how lovely it was to meet your beautiful lady yesterday.”

Everyone stares at me. “Cheers,” I say to him wryly. He glances around, pulls aneekface, and hastily withdraws.

“Oh…” Victoria’s eyes dance. “So you did apologize?”

“For what?” Titus looks intrigued. “What happened?”

“Nothing,” I growl. “We had dinner, that’s all.”

“I knew you liked her,” Elizabeth says softly.

“Mack and Sidnie, sitting in a tree,” Huxley sings. “K-I-S-S-I—”

“Fuck off, Hux.”

They all laugh, and then thankfully Titus turns the subject to business.

I listen, but for once my mind isn’t on the conversation. We’re not at the same table that I sat at with Sidnie, but I can easily picture her here, her blue eyes sparkling, her sexy, husky voice sending shivers down my back.

We all have to grow up sometime.

A waiter pours some Champagne into my glass, and I have a sip, thinking about Sidnie drinking it in my apartment. How I pushed her up against the countertop, and went down on her right there and then. How sweet she tasted.

Surreptitiously, I take my phone out of my pocket and turn it on. I bring up my texts. Then I send her a message.

Me:Hey. How’s your afternoon going?

Her:Oh, hi! Good thanks. I can’t stop looking at the roses. They’re gorgeous.

Me:So glad you liked them.

Her:What are you up to?

Me:Having lunch with the gang from Huxley’s. At Il Pescatore, funnily enough.

Her:Oh I envy you. That was such a lovely place.

Me:What are you doing right now?

Her:Having a sandwich. Not quite so impressive. And daydreaming.

Me:What about?

Her:You really have to ask?

Me:Tiramisu?

Her:Ha! Maybe. I’m disappointed I didn’t get around to the whipped dairy products fantasy.

“Are you texting her now?” Elizabeth asks.
