Money certainly does seem to solve most problems.

“I’ll check us in,” Mack says, walking across to the receptionist, and Jamie goes with him.

I stand with Emma and our bags, holding Gus’s leash. Emma smiles at me. “It was good of you to come.”

“I can’t believe he asked me,” I say softly, looking across at him. He’s signing the check-in document. Oh, he’s a leftie! I didn’t know that.

“He seems completely captivated by you,” she says. “I’ve never seen him like this.”

“Oh.” My face warms. “How long have you known him?”

“Jamie and I have been dating three years now.”

“Have you met many of his girlfriends?” I smile as her lips twist. “It’s okay, I know there have probably been a lot.”

“No, quite the opposite. I mean, I’m not saying he’s been a saint. Have you met the others at Huxley’s?”

“Huxley himself, yes, and Victoria, Elizabeth, and Titus.”

“What about Kai?”

“No, who’s he?”

“One of the directors at Koru Tech. They all went to the University of Auckland together. Mack, Kai, and Titus did computer engineering; Huxley and Victoria did a business degree; Elizabeth did chemistry, I think. But they all met at some party and clicked. They’re all geniuses in their own way, and they all worked hard and played hard. I think for a few years it was all sex and drugs and rock’n’roll, you know? Alongside the work, of course. They all work incredibly hard, but especially Mack. The guy’s a force of nature.”

“Tell me about it.” We watch the two of them walk back to us, carrying the key cards to the rooms.

“I see you’re a leftie,” I say as we wait for the elevator. “Trust you to have deviant behavior.”

Jamie and Emma laugh. Mack’s eyes gleam, and as the door opens and I walk past him, he smacks my butt.

“Ow.”

“Then behave.”

I settle Gus beside me, and then my eyes meet Mack’s as the doors close and the elevator rises. Jamie’s busy nuzzling Emma’s neck as he whispers to her. I poke my tongue out at Mack. He lifts an eyebrow. I can see the energy fizzing away inside him. I think I’m about to get soundly screwed.

Ooh.

The doors ping and open, and we walk along the corridor to the two rooms that are next to each other.

“See you at breakfast?” Jamie asks.

“Yeah, how about eight a.m.?” Mack suggests.

“Sounds good. Goodnight.”

We all wave, then disappear into our rooms.

The room is huge, and the front wall is all glass, looking out at the view of the Pacific. There’s a king-size bed covered in a plush white duvet, a sofa and chairs, and a kitchenette, and a beautiful bathroom through a side door all decked out in white marble.

“It’s gorgeous,” I say, putting my bag down. “Thank you so much for this, Mack.”

“I’m just glad you came.” He puts his bag and Gus’s bed down, then walks over to me and pulls me into his arms. “At last,” he murmurs, “I have you to myself.”

I put my arms around his neck. “I’m all yours.”

“That might be the nicest thing anyone’s ever said to me.”
