Early in the morning!

The men started stomping their boots in time with the music and I started singing louder in tune with everyone else inside the pub. I caught sight of Sean working alongside me, seeing that the stress that was written all over his face earlier had relaxed.

Early in the morning!

My voice rang as I sang the main chorus again. There were several men that looked at me with amusement and I chuckled along with them. It wasn’t every day that one of the most powerful mob bosses in Boston sang a song for you as he served you a drink.

My men rounded the room. Even amongst the crazed ruckus, the crowd treated them with respect. Tonight, there was a showing of several of the different families that ruled Southie, all here because of me. The Kellys sat together on the south wall, taking over many of the booths and a few tables in the corner. Brayden Kelly caught my gaze and raised his drink in my direction. We’d come to an agreement tonight, one that was going to make a hell of a lot of money for the both of us.

My mind should be focused on business, on the dangers involved in the many different ventures I was going to be taking part in. I needed to be thinking about how I was going to place my bookies at the racetrack, how I was soon going to be pushing to take over one of the biggest gambling dens in the city and how I could best keep my men safe even when I was going to be putting them in the face of danger.

I wasn’t thinking about them though.

I was thinking about her.

CHAPTER5

Leah

It had been a rough night, but Emma’s fever finally broke around six in the morning. Exhausted, but relieved, I started getting the two of us ready after eight. She was more back to her normal self aside from a scratchy throat. Her usual energy level was certainly above average, but I was relieved to see it coming out again.

I swore, sometimes I wish I could bottle her energy and sell it. It would be better than an espresso. It would make me famous; I was sure of it.

Just when I was about ready, someone slipped a note under the door. I paused, staring at it confused for a second before I went over and picked it up, glancing at the door suspiciously. I approached it cautiously before peeking out the peephole. There wasn’t anyone there, but there was something sitting on the landing just outside.

I unlocked it to find several bags full of groceries. With the note in my hand, I leaned down, picked them up, and carried them over to the kitchen table. Emma squealed excitedly as she ran over to me, spotting the bag of cookies on top of it right away.
